The race started with Darrell Waltrip on the pole with Geoff Bodine 2nd, Tim Richmond in 3rd and Neil Bonnett in 4th. Waltrip went on to win the race with a nice duel with Richmond (who finished 2nd) in the closing laps. Ricky Rudd (from 8th) finished 3rd and Rusty Wallace (from 6th) finishing in 4th place. Bonnett ended up in 8th and Bodine in in 39th after blowing an engine on lap 28.

Packed?
Maybe during the running of the first 2 California 500s for Indy cars.
One thing that didn't help was that there was seating for @200,000, so if 80k showed up, it looked empty.
BTW: One of the best Stock Car races I Have ever seen was the 1976 West Coast 250 at Ontario. An open comp race won by Jimmy Insolo by 6" over L.D. Ottinger. After a rain delay of one week, I along with about 4,500 other race fans were there. Plenty of room to stretch out
As Tim stated in his article, the weather for the scheduled weekend was not cooperating, yet the rescheduled race day weather was perfect. What limited me from taking very many actual race day photos (outside of budget constraints) was purchasing seats that had a perfect view of a couple of loud speakers directly in my line of site for the apex of turn 6. But anyway, here we go:
The Front Row:

Dave:
I agree with your assessment of Mr. Schmitt (Ha! Got it right)
Years ago I was contacted by his wife looking for some historical images to use as part of a surprise party gift for Bill, A very gracious lady.
One of these days I will spell Bill Schmitt's name right. I type Schmidt EVERY TIME.
