Watching NASCAR Promoters selling seats based on "Pay Backs" ? Al Hofmann last of Drag Racing's Tough Guys?

Buy / Sell / Trade

I didn't see the helmet heaves or read anything about it, sounds like Tony threw a tantrum...but I do know that Al Hoffmann was the toughest hombre who ever strapped himself into a nitro-fuelled hot rod. He had fun and he ran a top-5 team for several years, he had talent as a driver and a competitor, but it was his personality and his very presence at the drag strip that set him apart from everybody else. You didn't have to wait for a candygram to find out if Al Hoffmann disagreed with you. You also didn't have to wonder if he had anything good to say about you, either. The whiners and threaters were trying to imitate Big Al's style. Everybody knew that. Hoffmann smirked at them. Nobody messed with that guy and nobody could come close to having the respect and admiration of his peers like he had.

Force commented on Hoffmann's round win in Bristol over Cory Mac when Bruton Smith made the Funny Cars race the Top Fuel Dragsters for a couple of years. Cory Mac pulled up and staged while Big Al was pre-staged. Al whacked the throttle for a split-second...his car did a dry-hop and landed deep-staged, then instantly the tree was activated and off he went, with Cory Mac totally distracted. He won the round on a holeshot, and Force said it was the greatest starting line sleight-of-hand he'd ever seen.

I was sorry to lose him a few years ago, but he was unforgettable not only for his greatness as a racer but for the imprint he left on drag racing. Another Al Hoffmann will not be coming along. We were lucky to have him when we did. JB

Current Drag Racing

Thanks, BP! That is a very nice compiment!

I agree, Tom. I believe that 1968 was tied for the best year of the 1960s (with 1962) as the music we had then was so incredibly creative, diversified, sophisticated and meaningful...not to mention the year itself; the culture that went hand-in-hand with the music.

I've had that graphic for years...Thanks, Mort! Finally got a chance to use it for something! Reminds me of the Head Shops and Black Light Rooms we used to go through back then. What a year that was...

Looking forward to a great show tonight! See you folks there! JB

The First Time You Smelled NIitro? Where ? When ?

Current Drag Racing

Bruce, Houston Drag Raceway was where I attended my first event with my Dad as well! As I posted earlier, it was a match race between Vance Hunt and Bobby Langley, and I got doused with nitro. It made me crazy for the rest of my life...I was 12 in '62 and I'll never forget that day. It's gone now, civilization took over and it's a strip-mall (at least "strip" applies). Gay Pontiac is still there on the freeway in Dickinson, but it's now Gay Buick GMC. Wish Shane would keep the family tradition going! JB

The First Time You Smelled NIitro? Where ? When ?

Current Drag Racing

July, 1962 at Houston International Raceway in Dickinson, Texas. 2 out of 3 match race between Bobby Langley and Vance Hunt with J.L. Payne driving. Both dragsters had cast-iron 392 hemis with 6-71 blowers, Hilborn injector stacks, weed-burner headers and open chassis in front of the engine. Slingshot Rails. First race, Langley had problems and Payne won easily. Second round, both cars launched and laid down a solid quarter-mile of twin towers of white smoke. NOTHING screams like a pair of blown cast-iron hemis on nitro. The harmonics were the purest rock n' roll I've ever heard...I'd seen pictures of dragsters racing but I wasn't prepared for what I saw and heard that day. But when the scent of nitro hit my nostrils, I was instantly transformed into a lifelong nitro junkie. With a flag start, they both ran 8-flat and the race was declared a dead heat. It was a day that changed my life. I told Vance Hunt that when he was on the show last year. Great thread, Wally! Thanks! Cheers, JB

Terrible Tom Barnhill and Jim Harnsberger on Racin' & Rockin' January 16

Nostalgia Drag Racing

Looking forward to this show!

1969 was a tremendous year in popular music...many of the songs featured on the show are by now staples of our culture, and were part of an inspired and at times revolutionary year of change in the world. I will concentrate on stories about some of the songs' and writers' histories, which have amazed me when I researched them.

Should be a good rockin' night! Hope you can drop in! JB

Thanks to Barb Santucci and Bud DeBoer for rounding up our guests and to Jeff and Dustin Gilder for hosting our show!
