Biggest NASCAR Fire Not Involving Jet Dryer? Richmond 1973 - Thanks to TMC Collection / Brian John Hauck Photos

Stock Car Racing History

Here is 1 of 5 photos, I took of the fire at Richmond. The field wadded up in turn 4 and a fuel fire started. Cars were wedged into the armco guard rail. Everyone got out ok, but the fire raged for about 3 min. Other pix are on photobucket under 200winz. The BIG difference here was, at Richmond, they battled the blaze with fire extinguishers. Back in the day, there was no such thing as a jet dryer AND fire engines only pumped WATER. That chemical pumper at Daytona made all the difference in putting outTHATfire AND saving the racing surface! Oh yeah, if you heard Mike Joy tell the story of Cale Yarbrough hitting the fire engine at Richmond, Yup, I was there for that too! Have pix of the car, but sorry, not the fire engine!!

Sweeping NASCAR Changes Announced at Martinsville

General

That is no "April fools" joke, it is just a statement of fact as the way it used to be! I have lived through every moment described above and sometimes long for those days of old! I invite everyone to view my "old days" photos on photobucket under 200winz. I could not wait till that gate swang open and I would race to the pits in search of driver autographs! That is now why names like Petty, Goldsmith, Panch, Yarbrough, Castles, Scott, Pistone, Langley and many more grace those well-worn pages! It is a period of my life that I will cherish forever and makes me proud to be an "old-timer"! But at the same time, some things are for the better! Pit road speeds were necessary to protect those doing their jobs servicing the car! I saw some harrowing moments on pit road and during, "racing back to the caution"! Being all things Petty, I think it should be mandatory the drivers attend the King's class, as I personally, have stood by his side, until the sun went down, as he fulfilled every lastfan's dream, of the King's autograph, knowing all the while, that he had also fulfilled my dream's too!

Question of the Day for March 30, 2011

General

Being brand new here and not knowing anyone other than toomuchcountry, please allow me to chime in! Those of you who reside BELOW the Mason-Dixon Line, were always able to get "some sort of information" from your daily newspaper. But living in New Jerseythrough the 50's,60's,70'sand being a NASCAR fan? Before NASCAR went "mainstream", I had to suffer through full contact underwater basket weaving and the Okla. quilters semi-finals, to see, perhaps 30 laps of the Daytona 500 on Wide World of Sports, in AUGUST! Yeah, yeah, I am old school and like my racing that way, BUT...24 hours of information feeds my addiction! The "talking heads' and "experts" just spew "pink noise" when they go on about that of which they do not know! I can sort through that and get what I need to keep the tremors down to a slow boil, when I need my NASCAR fix! I do believe. if those same "heads" knew "their" sport, they could cut down on the repetition and really talk about the sport, the track and it's history. I would be more than happy to show them how it is done! Having been to over 220 Grand National-Winston Cup-Nextel-Sprint Cup races since 1967,,,,well, Speed Channel/ABC/Fox, I say bring your "A" game! If you are gonna talk the talk, you better have walked the walk!
