Here's an Associated Press brief published on July 5, 1970 in the Lumberton, NC newspaper, The Robesonian , the day after Gene's heart attack death at Richmond's Southside Speedway:

Dave a man that traveled to the races and was Gene Lovelace's engine builder named Joe Smith told me that he was there in the pits at Southside Speedway when Gene died. He said that Lovelace got out of the car on his own and when his feet touched the ground he jumped 18" straight up in the air when the heart attack hit him.My father's race car # 37 driven by B u t c h To r r i e ran with Gene Lovelace many times back in the day.

Gene didn't race it long, but I thought his Late Model Sportsman Chevelle was one of the prettiest cars that ever came to Southside. I only saw it once or twice. I'd love to see a photo of that car.
