This car dominated the eastern Carolina dirt scene for years. Built by Junior Johnson (Florence, SC) the Chevelle body utilized a '55 Chevy chassis, and was sold to John Altman and Sam Ard prior to the 1968 season. New owner's Ard, and Altman switched the number "81" to "84". The car sat on the pole and won the "Azaela 250" (LAPS) at Leland (NC) Raceway in early April of that year and never looked back.Sam went solo with his own #82 Chevelle in 1969 but the John Altman #84 continued to dominate the eastern Carolina's with Jackie Rogers of Wilmington, NC at the helm. In 1969, Rogers finished second to the potent Haskell Willingham/Marion Cox team in North Carolina state NASCAR late model sportsman points, with this car, and won the incredible Thanksgiving Day race at Myrtle Beach Speedway that started 67 entries. This incredible race car was then sold to a team headed by paving contractor, Alan Bordeaux, of Leland, NC where it was driven to many more victories at the old Leland Raceway, repainted blue and re-numbered to "00". The Bordeaux/Sandlin team eventually sold the car, yet again, and the trail was lost.

Watched this car win many times. Bobby is exactly right with the history. This was the original ''Big Daddy'' car. Sam's next car was #82 Chevelle''Big Daddy's Papa''. This particular car was a nightmare for the competiton no matter who was behind the wheel. Bobby , I remember Glenn Williamson from the Shallotte area also.

Janice, is that possibly Sam's blue 55 Ford #0 in the background? If it is,that is the car that gave me the racing bug as a young lad. A disease that I still carry today. Please tell Jo and Sam how much their generosity with Sam's history is appreciated. SAM ALWAYS WAS AND STILL IS # 1 IN MY HEART.

It is indeed Sam's #0 in the background. I know what you mean, Willliam. Once you get that bug it is incurable! I will pass your message on to Sam and Jo. I was there this afternoon and Sam was watching a race.

William, thank you for remembering my dad, Glen Wlliamson...........Janice the reason I know the #84 "Big Daddy" car so well................it was a thorn in our side for YEARS!!! LOL. Dad was a contemporary of Sam Ard, Jackie Rogers.....and all the rest, back in that golden age of racing.
