Gwyn's death in the March 23, 1958 NASCAR Convertible race at Richmond is the only fatality in that track's history. At least one source says his death was the only fatality in the history of the division, but I can't vouch for the accuracy of that claim.

I was told by his daughter that the man in the car is not Gwyn Staley but the car sure was, I don't know the story behind the photo, perhaps a tribute lap. I had forgotten what track he was killed at, thanks for the info. Dave.

Gwyn Staley of Burlington, NC last drove this 1956 Chevy to a 4th place finish in a Nascar convertible race at Jacksonville,NC on November 11th, 1956. The car next showed up in Dayton, OH where Iggy Katona drove it to a 2nd place finish in a MARC sanctioned race on April 14th, 1957. Note that the name on the door in Dayton still says Gwyn Staley. This photo is from the Jim Wilmore Collection.

Well that explains the stranger in the photo.  I practically got cussed out about this photo when I posted it as Gwyn Staley since I had no idea what he looked like, am glad this is finally cleared up.  The grandstand always had me a little confused in my early interests in the history of NASCAR, covered grandstands are common in the north, not so much the south (should be the other way around), I could never place this track due to that dilemma of a southern stock car in a northern setting. Thanks for clearing this up Jack, and yes, that driver is Iggy Katona now that you figured it out.
