"Vallo Claims Kil-Kare Main Event Quailfier Win", by Jerry Wahl
XENIA, OH - June 19 - Former Kil-Kare Speedway champion John Vallo of Fairborn, OH, returned to his home track Friday night to compete in the Main Event Super Late Model Qualifier and his presence was well noticed as he captured his third such event at Kil-Kare. Vallo won in 1996 and 1997.
Twenty-seven Super Late Models took the clock with first Dick Dunlevy, Jr. breaking the track record of 13.422, held by Don Mahaffey, Jr. set in 1997. Mahaffey was the last driver to face the clock and when he did the record was regained by him with a clocking of 13.358.
With the top six cars inverted, this put Tim Ice and Rick Rohrer on the pole. When the green waved before the near capacity crowd, Ice shot into the lead followed by Roherer, Vallo and Dunlevy, Jr. Seven laps later, Roherer slowed, coming to a stop n the front stretch to bring out the first of three yellows.
With the green back out, Ice continued to lead with Vallo on his rear bumper as they approached lap traffic which caught Ice behind a slower car and Vallo out front. The caution came out on lap 34 for a three car tangle then again on lap 36. Vallo continued to set the pace in his Burko Trucking special with Ice giving up second to Dunlevy on lap 55. Dunlevy moved up on Vallo several times as they wound their way through traffic to finish in that order with Ice, Mahaffey and Mike Ward completing the top five.
