#300 AT COLUMBUS MOTOR SPEEDWAY Much like the sport of bowling where 300 is a perfect score, so it is for John Vallo. Or, at least we thought so, but when the Fairborn, OH driver captured his 300th career feature win Saturday at Columbus Motor Speedway he started rethinking his racing career end game. 'I was thinking about quitting when I got to 300 but I'm not sure now,' proclaimed the winner following the annual Firecracker Championship event. Vallo's possible change of heart will most likely be enforced by his ascension to the top of the track championship driver standings. Benefited by a first lap crash that eliminated point leader Donnie Hill Vallo now finds himself at the head of the late model class. Jimmy Kidd and Jamie Hunt led the 23-car NASCAR Whelen All American late model field to green flag with the former assuming control from the outset. Hunt dropped in behind but when the leaders happened upon the disabled car of Dave Altizer at the end of the first circuit, Hill, Bobby Justus had nowhere to go. All three cars were eliminated for the complete restart which found Kidd again pulling ahead of Hunt. The fifth-starting Vallo was on the move early bypassing Matthew Parsons three laps in. Up to third at that juncture, he next took on Hunt displacing him before lap seven went up on the NASCAR scoreboard. Continuing his onslaught, Vallo closed quickly on the race leader and pulled his Bond Machine entry into the outside lane of the third-mile paved oval, dispatching Kidd three circuits hence. As he pulled away from the rest of the field, Donnie Renner began to make his presence felt. Competing with a heavy heart due to the recent passing of best friend Robbie Dean, Renner was up to fourth on lap ten. Powering around Hunt and Kidd by the mid-point of the contest, he set out after Vallo. Aided by a late race caution, Renner's deficit was erased and he lined up immediately behind the race leader for the sprint to the finish. Try as he may, however, Vallo held on for the victory narrowly edging Renner with Kidd, Chad Pendleton and Hunt completing the first five spots.
