Ever wonder where the drivers get their famous numbers from? I got mine from my dad ,he used two different numbers on his two cars for reasons im sure. Heres Rustys tale; Mississippi Racing Legend Joe Caspolich tells this tale one night just before his untimely death in 2008, the phone rang one afternoon and it was Roger Penske calling. Mr. Penske said that he had a young driver that he was going to put into a race car and Roger wanted to know if Joe would let the new kid use his old number. He told Roger that he could use his number once the kid had won 4 races in a row. Roger just laughed Turns out the kid had just won his 5th race in a row. The car number was Joe's #2 and the kid was Rusty Wallace. The rest is racing history !!

I heard a completely different story about that #2. This one came from the horses mouth. That number belonged to D.K. Ulrich until 'Ol DK sold it to Rusty/Penske...can't remember but I think it was '90...no maybe '91...heck might have been '92. but the sale of that number paid for one of DK's airplanes. If I'm not too for off here ...I think the selling price was around $125,000.00. I'm pretty sure that story is recorded somewhere here on RR in an interview with DK. If you check the hsitory of the car number I think you'll find it was registered to DK up until it became Rusty's. There sere several guys who drove for DK in 1990.Ted Musgrave, Charlie Glotzbach, Jim Sauter, Rick Mast, Eddy Bierschwale, Jim Brown Jerry O'neil...and I think they were in #2. Ok that's a homework assignment...somebody check me out here. I might be ALL wrong.
