When the first track was built at home it was a little quarter mile dirt track with a figure eight in the middle.Every little shop and a few service stations were in the process of building what was to be the center of attraction around home. Across from the track there was a little Jim Walter home that set back off the road aways and it had a lean to shop on the side where this guy did odd jobs to make ends meet.Race nite came and there were every kind of car you could imagine there from newly built cars to old rust buckets brought back to life for at least the moment.Well the guy across the street was there in all his shining glory with what was to him the winning combination for tonites event. The first races were started by drawing for position as no one had any points yet to base starting positions on.The guy across the street drawed a fairly good number and started the fist race of his life on the outside of row three. He had built a good looking old 55 ford but the motor was used,to the point it smoked so mosquitoes were not a problem that nite. Green flag and away they went sailing into the first turn two by two and that old ford was huffing but it kept up and he ended up finishing fourth in his first race ever. Now let me tell you he was a proud driver because of his accomplishment and his wife was a spring board all over the place shouting over his finish too.The feature was run and he finished, well lets just say he finished the feature. Now comes time for the crazy eight race and now here is where the little red ford number 28 shines because the driver had a mission it seems to win the race and he does. He is jumping for joy now because he has just won more than double his pay where he works regularly.Best I can remember there were four stairstep kids and the oldest being maybe six and they having a ball too. That old ford was there every race that was held and then----a new track on the other side of town was open so they made arrangements to pull their car over there with his wife driving and he would steer the race car . That didnt go over to good because traffic just wasnt ready for this going through town and would you believe it that someone ran into the race car!! Well this set off the cops and no pulling cars with chains was allowed after that.Next week the friday nite race was across from his house so no problem but saturday nites race presented a delima and my dad solved that quick,he sent our trailer back to bring over to get the ford so no harm no foul there and we became friends. Boy he sure could drive that old ford especially in the figure eight and he made a name for himself there in the cross.Next year he built himself a new car that didnt smoke and ran pretty decent too and he also built himself a trailer too because more tracks were opening up around us.He wrecked his car bigtime in the feature a few weeks later and now he is without a ride, but not for long because a retired guy from air force had just built a nice fifty five chevy and proceeded to place our friend in the drivers seat, now this car has the ability to run up front and boy was he excited. He started on the pole because this car hasnt ran before and they go by the number on car. Well old number fifty nine was setting on the pole in the feature and away we went, thirty laps isnt long on a quarter mile track so those of us that starts in the back we on a tear to get to the front to try to win but not this nite because that fifty five chevy #59 has checked out and won the feature hands down. and to top it all off won the figure eight also. I looked at dad and said now look at what has happened,we created another car to out run, dad laughed and said he deserved it. Best I can remember the feature paid two hundred to win and the crazy eight paid one fifty so he done made a months pay in one nigh,.oh yeah this was in the middle sixtys so we were in our golden years. Then we
