It started late one afternoon while setting around the old fireplace listening to the radio, Earnest just wouldnt shut up about that new car he just bought up Knoxville Tn. You see his brother had a pretty fair running old chevy even though it actually had a Caddy engine in it. But now you got to understand this was in 1950 and everyone was still riding the high that came from the war with Japan.Later that day Earnest and his brother decided to go for a ride in this new car. Down the road a few miles was a straight stretch of road that a lot of them younger generation drivers aired out the car for the four mile stretch before you had to slow way down for a hairpin turn where the road went along the Little Tennessee River for aways.Low and behold that little coupe flew down that straightaway like it was born to fly,on the return trip to the house they stopped by Bobby Jeans grocery store for a soda and to give the car a break. While they were kinda propped up in the shade another car eased up and parked, out stepped this pretty as a pup young blonde and looked over at the boys kinda in a shy but taunting look before she went into the store. Earnest asked Walter, his brother,if he knew who that cute blonde was that got out of the little 34 ford coupe. Nope shore dont but I saw that car over in Sweetwater at the garage where those hotrod race cars are always setting. Wasnt long before she came back out of the store and boy were they ready for her this time,it didnt take Earnest but a few minutes to get the lowdown on her inside while his brother talked to her at the car. Come to find out she was eyeing that new Olds coupe that was setting there sparkling in the sun and now they were on equal grounds talking,or at least the boys thought so anyway. Come to find out this luscous looking blonde was the owner of two of the racecars that set over in town. She invited them to come over to the garage and let her dad tune up that Olds sometime and that set Earnest off because his car was tiptop shape and she just looked and smiled and said,I got $20.00 says my old Ford here will dust you from here to the old well before the hairturn. In my book thats a challenge worth considering but to Walter he thought it was funny a sweet little thing like her would even try to take his brothers money in a race like that, well fifteen minutes later they were setting under the shade tree at the well counting up their money to give to her, then she invited the boys to come over to the shop today while we load the cars up, In fact you boys come go with us to the races down in Cleveland sunday and you can come set in the pits with us. Wow what red blooded american boy would turn that down.Off to the house they flew and Walter said he would meet Earnest there in an hour after he went home and spruced up a little. Some how both arrived at the garage together and parked just in time to see the first of the two cars come out of the garage to be loaded, boy it was a pretty sight too. The second came out and it was just like the first with the exception of the number being different and the front fenders being painted red. They walked up to the front door and a guy as big as the door itself asked them if he could help them while blocking their entrance inside the shop. About that time that cute face made the scene again and politely told her brother they were guests of hers and then he was all in the friendly way of wanting to talk their head off. Her dad came out and smiled at the two and said I see my little girl lightened you boys pockets a little today. Well Walter kinda shook it off and said good thing he wasnt driving his car or the outcome may have been different. Her dad smiled and said you dont know who my little girl is do you.Now this has both the brothers stopped in their tracks because neither had put any thought to who she was other than a pretty face with a fast hotrod. After a thirty minute background enlightening the two kinda backed away and said wow.Sunday came and both the brothers were in the line going into the pits behind her two cars, then it hit them, neither one had seen or heard of the drivers for the two cars. It didnt take long for that to be straightened out either. That cute little body had a driving suit poured all over it and man she looked fine in it,but naa she aint the driver,is she?? Wrong again boys, she climbed in the car with the red fenders and went out and, well lets say she was the show in warmups but then the flagman has put out the green and now them two cars were flying around the track, wait a minute, who is in the other car? They looked around and everbody that came from the shop was accounted for,ok we will find out in a few minutes when they come in from warmup laps.In they both came and they parked on each side of the service truck that was waiting for them. Boy she sure looked pretty in that driving suit as she climbed out. Earnest was the first to notice it and turned to Walter and said I thought that suit she had on was white, Walter said yup shore was,but now she done went and changed into a blue one,no wait a minute there is a blue one and a white one, dang it Walter there are two girls here driving these cars, well now boy are they mixed up and nothing else would do but off to find that brother thats big enough to get some answers. After he quit laughing at the boys he hollered at pop and said the boys done been had again by sis. Their dad came over to see what was so dad-burn funny and couldnt resist a chuckle either. Now you see the two girls are sisters but thats not all, they are identical twins and everybody knows there are two kind of girls in Tennessee, cute and drop dead gorgous and these two had both covered.Back to the racing, the girls dont win but a third and fifth aint to shabby against the likes of what comes out of Ga,Tn,Al, and NC to run at this track.Back at the shop next week the brothers are there with their cars getting that little tune up did that was to be the start of a lifetime of fun and excitement for the brothers. No they didnt marry the girls and go live happily ever after but in fact they took the chevy with the caddy in it and went modified racing and even went down to Daytona the next spring and now they only got one car for two drivers, so back up to that shop they went and had another car built and he even said he would go down to the next race to help them set the cars up. Well this turned into a killer deal for them because now they had the best of both ends, fast cars and great mechanics. Next year they went to daytona and Darlington and a few other prominent tracks and set the racing world on fire. That guy in Florida who has the beach course said they were good for the sport and they were loving it too.Their baby sister even ran a few races trying to follow in their footsteps but the competition was getting serious and speeds were getting faster. The twins continued making a name for theirself on the short tracks and business picked up to the point those old cars that never moved except at night were converted into race cars because the nite trips out of the mountains were getting to the point that getting thru was almost impossible. So now there is a sign out saying open all hours and their work speaks for itself each week on the tracks. One of the girls owns a growing paper company and the other owns a auto parts chain specializing in racing parts. The two brothers won their fair share of races and retired aound Atlanta in the auto business. The big brother opened a shop over the line in Ga and had two boys who set the racing world on fire with their ford. Now all these familys are retired now and every year you will find them in the north Ga mountains celebrating moonshine month and reliving these and other stories of racing back in the day. The girls even have their cars they bring down and park on the main drag along with many others. People come from far and wide to get that picture with one of them or that unique signature thats priceless and o-yeah there are pint fruit jars with seals on them that are to perserve the freshness of that mountain spring water. So next year if you are in the area stop by and stay a while because when you leave you will have the best of --------------------------------memories
