SOUTHERN NITES
After a lengthy trip down I-95 you arrive at your destination, the quiet lazy beach area known as Daytona Beach Fla.
You fi nd that quiet little motel you booked a quiet weeks stay and up to that wonderful bed you flop and quietly ease off into dream land. Noises in the background you hear but easily block them out.
Next morning you rise to a new day away from the hustle and bustle of that big city life. Coffee you say and then you remember that you saw a sign out of the past that always had great coffee all the time. Yup up the road you can see that famous 7/11 sign glowing in the early dew.
So off you go down to the local 7/11 for that java. Man that taste and the brew does its magic on your brain,or does it.
You look out at the noise going by and "there it is" a ground -hugging little Chevy coupe. Its something you have been watching on the internet. Those old cars from yesteryear that seem to be coming back to life.
So out to the road you go to see where it was going when here comes an old model coach or sedan.
I thought it was against the law to drive racecars on the highway and open headers too??
soo curiosity gets the best of you and down the road you go to get a better look at what you thought you just saw.
Well as luck would have it the road is closed just ahead but parking is available, can you believe this?
So park you do then board a shuttle thats going to take you back in time.
It doesnt take long before this people mover stops and everyone gets off in flurry. Then there it is again, that black coupe and about 30 others all setting just waiting for something.
Over on a front row I see what looks to be a later model Olds with letters on it and a number 2 shining big and proper. The guy standing beside it looks happy and signs autographs as others come by. Now its getting interesting because a cop car setting out in the street makes a startling announcement, GENTLEMEN start your engines. Now I am dreaming, it must be this coffee I bought.
Shucks these cars start lining up out on the street like they going to race on the street. Isnt that something they used to do down here before they built the big track out by interstate?
Ok off they go down the street to where only they know. Now the crowd starts heading down towards the beach where someone says they will be coming back up the beach just like the old days. Wow I might have stumbled onto something here so I detour into a cafe of sorts called North turn and the walls covered with photos of just what I am seeing going on outside, kinda.
Well outside I see that quite a crowd has gathered where a bunch of checker flags are blowing in the breeze. Listen to that noise,it sounds just like I was back in time at an old dirt track race.
Here they come and those people or fans whichever are cheering and clapping like it was Indy.
Then I spill my coffee on my leg and I wake up and get off the bench that I have fell asleep on.
So do they really relive the good ole days on the beach at Daytona or was it truly a bad cup of coffee..
