During my time working at then superstation Q-105, we had Scott Shannon of American Top 40, Mason Dixon, Cleveland Wheeler, Bobby Rich, Ronnie Nightrain Lane (voice of the Buccanneers) and Tremonte Watts (who later died of brain tumors).
We simulcasted on Channel 32 out of Lakeland on the flagship Q-105, Q-Zoo Tube. Paula Abdul was hot on played on the CHR station and it was the Halcyon Days on Contemporary Hit Radio. I also worked on between 80-100 radio stations and this is good for PSAs, fundraising and memorials.
One day Ronnie called me and I worked from home and wanted to know what transponder the game was on and as he did, the Buccs Garry Anderson went off on an 80 yard run for a TD and I was calling the game as it happened on the air. He told me good job but it was a stepping stone to getting a strong relationship with drivers and owners of East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, Florida.
So when I went to the track there was another former Air Force guy who worked as track manager and Ronnie Batton and he told the owners at that time, the Prevatts to listen to my work. We established such a trust that I was called whenever they laid down the track surface for the new year just before the Winternationals.
Jean Lynch, whose son last night posted his 110th feature win at Lernerville Speedway. She works with the World Racing Group from Charlotte, NC, Syracuse, NY and Knoxville at the vaunted Sprint Car Hall of Fame.
I've helped tracks with weather like Golden Sands Speedway where I saw Mark Martin, Dick Trickle, and many names that become NASCAR veterans. I helped I-30 in Little Rock, and so many others.
We even had Kenny Adams (ASCS-South Superstar) who came up from South Florida to do a charity for the Taste of Town-N-Country. Paulie Millum (Hooter's Blood Drive), Gene Lasker of Tampa who I had Holly Cain of the Tampa Tribune do reports of Lasker's 17 feature win season and his AWOL Championship.
After the Southeastern Championship we had a big party and Lasker had an MC Group called the Outlaws and yes those outlaws. 1%er types with some pretty tough characters, but such is the life in racing where drivers work with media and we get things done.
From the 22K we made with the CCFA to all those other venues racing was prominent and actually got the ball rolling. And yet this is a common thing with the racing community. I was a SSgt and Meteorologist in the United States Air Force in the 70s and 80s and served for 11 years, getting out at McGuire AFB, NJ. I take care of the racing community with regards to weather and promotions and want to keep the history and dreams alive here.
Another nice one Larry. I'm enjoying your blog very much!!
