Racing in Europe & Eating

I was hungry for auto-racing in Germany and while stationed at Ramstein AB, I found dirt racing in Kaiserslautern, Germany. Driving on a backroad there I spotted what looked to be a race track and I went close enough to learn that there was and I would estimate a 1/4 mile dirt oval.

The cars themselves were very bizarre, like a low budget version of street stocks, mini-stocks and modifieds I found their choice of racing platforms to be interesting. In fact, the whole thing was interesting as the cars raced upon a loose kind of dirt/sand that quickly bogged cars down, to the point where the yellow flag came out. That was the downside to it all and while it was different and I am being nice, it is racing and I take off my hat to the people across the world who engage in short track and dirt track racing specifically.

I would estimate there was like 40 race cars there that day and it was a fun memory overall. I spoke German enough to understand a lot of the words and can only imagine if I did not. Not too big of problem since my brother married a German girl and I spent a lot of time in the community surrounding her home town.

Racing is a natural thing though and sports a facility called the Nurburgring.

One really cool thing is besides the formal racing events like above, you can take your Mercedes, your BMW, Corvette, Trans Am or Camaro on the track and go as fast as you want. Of course you better get tires rated for the high speeds like on the Autobahn and quiet incidentally many would trade their Beamers for a Corvette or any of the cars listed above. They pine for our cars especially the fast looking ones.

Also, do not be surprised that a Golf Rabbit passes you at 140mph on the Autobahn and the GTI can be retrofitted to Porsche Specs. I saw that in Neuesport Magazine in 1982. The car was valued at 180,000 US Dollars and that car could reach 200mph.

On a sidenote, Germany was fun. You had those restaurants where you could get veal and other finer german foods like JaegerSchnitzel or any Schnitzel you like, My favorite was Parmesan-Schnitzel. Awesome and makes me hungry to think of it. Dining there was not fast food. Oh sure they had their fast food places like McDonalds but mostly the sit down places you ate it there were no time limits. As long as you buy bier.. lol

They did have a schnell Imbiss which is nothing more than a hotdog venue or Fast Food Shack where you can get sausages, flat Coke and a few other things.

Yes, Germans would add fizz to their drinks and a flat Coke is not particularly that special, especially when it is warm. lol

If you do go to Mickey D's you can order Ein Viertel Pfunde mit Kaisse. Quarter Pounder with Cheese and Mayo. lol or Doch immer mehr Menschen wiegen nicht nur ein paar Pfunde zuviel, ... Rund ein Viertel der Erwachsenen ist.

Which one is the 1/4er pounder with cheese? LOL

If you ever get the chance, Germany is awesome and the racing varies from place to place....
