While living at Hunter AFB, from 64-67, our family would go to Savannah Speedway, I think out on hwy 17. Can anyone tell me if the track is still around, and if it is still dirt. Also does anyone rermember Crugar Johnson, Bubba Into, and Lee Roy Yarbough. Also one gentelman who would run in his sundays best, tie and all. I think he had a stuffed monkey attached to the right side of the roof. Of course Tiny Lund ran there often. I remember one time, Bubbas dodge and Tinys ford being tore town right on the front straight after the feature, with all the fans standing right there. There are some other names on the tip of my tonuge, but all I can recall are the sights, sounds and smells.

Thanks for the nfo. Not many of the old tracks still around. I have an old '47 Merc sedan that I restored and it ran the track outside of Dodson TX in the '50s and 60s. The track is still there, but it is also in the middle of no where, on the edge of a wheat field and Approx 70 miles from Vernon Tx which is where I live.

Lloyd, I remember Bubba Into, he ran lots of coastal area tracks back in the day. Savannah was paved in the early 1970's when RJR came on-board NASCAR. Columbia (Thursday), Savannah (Friday) and Myrtle Beach (Saturday) comprised a little three track circuit that existed through the mid to late '70's. Sam Ard, Sam Sommers, Don Miller, Tommy Porter were some of the guys from that era.I've got a collection of Carolina "ghost" tracks, if you're interested: http://www.localracechat.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=285If that link don't work try.........www.localracechat.com.........."forums".............."vintage racing".........."ghost tracks"

The Savannah Speedway was bought by a devolper who made a sand pit out of the area.
