First i am no writer nor do i wanna be.I just felt moved to write some things down on how racing been a part of my life.I was blessed to grow up in a town that racing was every thing. For as long as i can think, racing been most of what i love to do and think about. When i was a kid ,a bunch of us would hitch hike( milesss away) every weekend to the Ole Concord Speedway.None of us could drive yet, so walking it was.Needless to say we didn't have a dime to our name.Seeing no one ever had any money, we made a big hole under the fence to sneak in.Funny they never fixed that hole in all them years. We would sneak up in the crowd and was home free. The closer you got to your seat, the louder the cars got and the smell was like heaven.Penny Brown would have a arm full of popcorn, smelling it would bout fill me up.

We sit in the same place every time,1st turn 3rd row from the top,all the way at the end.The same people were there every week doing the same thing smiling from ear to ear.Being at that race track gave me and other's a feeling you can not buy.I knew at a very young age ,this is for me.I would look down in the pits and see the cars warming up and that just did it.My favorite driver was Freddy Smith 00.That man could and still can drive a race car.I liked Freddy cause he could drive through traffic and never touch a soul.Every thing i had,had the #00 on it.

I would get the shakes every time the race started.I go back alot times now in my mine and still see Freddy,Billy Scott,Carl Smart,Stick Elliot,Haywood Plyer ( AS WE CALLED HIM),Slick Poston,Ralph Earnhardt, and many more take the green. As a kid i would sit and stare at Freddy's car in corners.I knew nothing about a car being lose or pushing but,i knew something was not right about the car.My dreams as a kid watching all my hero's was never to drive but, to build and work on the car's they drove.Without me knowing it,this was the best time of my life.

The Track,Driver's,Penny selling popcorn, hambugar stand, never made a single dime off us.They did more then that. They made us all a big fan of racing. The people of racing and i mean all them make up what racing is and was.Everyone is important in racing all the way from the car owner's to the youngest of fan's.Over the years racing has kinda went away from what it was to me.Times have changed for kids now.It is no longer safe for kids to hitch hike to a track. The fence's are higher now and more protected. Most track's don't have the Penny Brown's selling popcorn in the stand's.The Dirt track's are leaving us,i miss washing my face and looking at all the red dirt on the rag.I wished my own kids had the chance to live like i was blessed with racing.Nascar is trying to get more fan's back or make new fan's.My call to them would be get back to your root's,it worked before it can work again.Oh yea one more thing. After the race with my hero's, you got to ride with them in their race car's when they won.Now they just do burn out's alone.

Not a writer????? Max, you painted a picture with your words that included the sights, sounds and smells. Dude, you are an A-1, first class writer in my book. I think I'm going to steal some of your thoughts for this week's Legendtorial on the Tuesday night radio show. What awesome memories. Thank you for writing and please, please share some more.
