1965 Rookie of Year Sam McQuagg Dies
Sam McQuagg of Midland Ga. died Saturday of cancer at the age of 73. He ran on the Grand National Curcuit and won the Rookie of the year title in 1965. In 1966 he won the Daytona Firecracker 400, he was better known through out Georgia,Ala,and Florida for his dirt track racing as a many time winner. He last race on the Grand National tour in 1972 and was the chief pilot for W.C.Bradley where he retired. He bought a motorhome and he and his wife traveled through out the country. He loved to fish and hunt.He was inducted into the Old Jacksonville Drag racing hall of Fame and the Jacksonville Raceway hall of fame and the Georgia Automobile Racing Hall of Fame. He is survived by his wife Joy his sons, Sam Jr.,Mark, Jay, and a daughter Rita, all of whom made Sams world go round.From all who knew him we bid God speed Sam.

I knew Sam was deceased, but I just now saw this post. I saw Sam win many races at the old Valdosta 75 Speedway in Valdosta, GA. He and Harvey Jones from Tallahassee had many duels on that track. I also heard that Sam and Harvey passed away the same year. One story about Sam which may not be well-known occurred the weekend the Grand National drivers were scheduled to run on the Valdosta track. The regular driver of a certain '64 Ford could not be there that weekend and Sam was asked to drive the car. Well, that race was rained out before the half way point and the rain date was the following weekend. Since the regular driver was able to be there for the rain date, he took over the driving chores and won the race. That was Cale Yarbrough's first NASCAR Grand National win.
