Sorry to hear today that former track announcer for Martinsville Speedway, Lewis Compton passed away back on February 27th., according to the Roanoke Times. Compton had suffered from complications due to diabetes the past several years, and was known as "The Mouth of the South". He announced at Martinsville from the 50's through the early 80's, and also announced at Bowman Gray, Franklin County, and the old Ararat Speedway back in the 50's along with who knows where else. Compton also worked for WHEE radio in Martinsville. Another pioneer of our early days, rich in history and stories is now gone.
