On Feb. 19 a 2000 mile race started from Big Lake, Anchorage Alaska to Nome, then Fairbanks and back to Anchorage. So what does this have to do with us racers in the south? Well, there's there is a driver-track builder owner in the Iron Dog Iditerrod snowmobile race from Bradenton Fla., my father-in-law, Gene Tharpe. Did I mention he is also 71 years young and on day three their team 46 has the lead!! I've been tracking them at Iron Dog. org who have a GPS tracking link. Gene raced at Golden Gate Speedway,Saramana raceway and other central Florida tracks from the early 60's to the mid 80's and being an engineer by trade, built and opened DeSoto Memorial Dragstrip in 1973, and built and opened DeSoto Speedway in 1978,a 3/8 mile banked paved oval. He's been going to Alaska a couple times a year for about 15 years and gained a lot of experience needed to stay alive in those conditions and is teamed with 5 veterans. On the 4'th day they are just past the halfway point and mushing on! So if you get a little bored with NASCAR or OFF-SEASON, check out TEAM 46 recreational race team at irondog.org and go to the GPS link. I can only HOPE I'm able to do something like that when I'm 71 years young!! More power to the "EXPERIENCED" racers!! They will race anything, just throw the green flag! GOOD LUCK TEAM 46 AND BE SAFE!!
