About fourty years ago a father took his little girl to her first race, sat in the stands, and laughed at the way she would put her hands over her ears to block the noise from the cars. He took his daughter there several more times as he was helping a friend on one of the stock cars and the little girl really enjoyed going. "Daddy,... Daddy,....Daddy, I really like the "funny cars" she would yell to him over the roar of the engines. He would smile and laugh and they would both watch intensley as the cars roared around the little 1/4 mile track. Years went by and dads interest turned to other sports he was involved in. The little girl never did quite grow up like other girls, she wanted Santa to bring her a race track or some hot wheels cars. No dollies for this little girl. She grew up and into motorcycles. She and her brother could be found any sunny day tearing up the dirt roads and back woods near their house. Then they found a little track where they could race competivly. That went on for a couple of years until the girl coming off a jump broke the mono-shock and took a bad spill. She decided two wheels wern't for her. So she went back to the little1/4 mile track she had loved as a girl (now shes in her teens). She started helping a modified driver and impressed many of the other drivers on how much she knew about cars. Told you she wasnt a typical girl. When she turned 22 she got her first ride. 4 cylinder at Caroway. Dad asked his little girl "where do you think you will get racing a car?" her reply was "Maybe nowhere dad, but then again I might be good at it." She raced at several tracks and dad kept the car together for her. And then brother started racing too. They had their shop in a building that used to house chickens. Races came and races went, and so did the money. She ended up loosing everything to pay bills. Brother did the same. Few years later Dad decides to have him some fun. Once racing is in your blood it is hard to get it out. He racced his 37 Ford and won some races. His little girl there for almost all of them. Then She gets her chance a running the old cars, and now the two of them are a threat to win at most any track they go. AS you may have figured out this is a story about Ronda McKnight and Clayton Smith. My dad took me to BGS when I just a little girl and the racing just stuck with us.That is what the racing is about at BGS or anywhere else---family. I would not take anything for the relationship that I have with my father now. It is all because of racing that keeps us as close now as we were back 40 years ago. I'm sure that my story is't much different than others. I all comes down to family and doing what we enjoy most. And by the way the "funny cars" she liked the most were the Modifieds at Bowman Gray.

Great story Rhonda. I remember seeing you run at Caraway, I was running in the Limited class. Like Joe, we have a lot in common. Hope I get to see you run the Modified.

Your story really hit home..I grew up on local dirt tracks with my dad in NYS and he was then and always my reason for loving the old coupes. I truely admire you for going after your dream and and making it reality! You are so very fortunate to have overcome all the hardships of success but your determination got you where you are and your love for racing kept your dream intact. I have a friend in N.C. who restored his '36 last yearand is running the southern dirt tracks and doing quite well. With this in mind I just wanted to say you are one top notch lady..congradulations! I posted a blogg a few weeks ago dedicated to this friend and family..yes it is our roots that gave us our passion for stockcar racing. Your story is certainally heartfelt and from deep..thank you for sharing your thoughts. Linda
