Darel Dieringer outduels Dave MacDonald to win the 1963 NASCAR Golden State 400 at Riverside International Raceway. MacDonalds teammate Marvin Panch got the hole shot to take the early lead but Freddy Lorenzen roared past him before the end of the first lap. MacDonald (92 laps), Dieringer (35) & Lorenzen (21) were the only drivers to lead in this race and MacDonald had his Wood Bros Ford out front on lap 97 when he lost 3rd gear and had to run the rest of the way in two gears. Dave had built a sizeable lead to that point but Dieringer slowly reeled him in and took the lead for good on lap 119. MacDonald & Panch finished 2nd & 3rd and gave the Wood Bros their best showing of the yearNotable finshers:Darel Dieringer 1st, Dave MacDonald 2nd, Marvin Panch 3rd, Fireball Roberts 4th, Junior Johnson 5th, Joe Weatherly 7th, Ken Miles 11th, David Pearson 13th, Jimmy Pardue 22nd, Bob Bondurant 29th, Paul Goldsmith 31st, Freddy Lorenzen 32nd, Billy Wade 33rd, Ned Jarrett 34th, Richard Petty 36th& Rex White 37th
