I wanted to tell the "rest of the story" of Cody's story on the show about Marty Robbins.
Marty did indeed pull out of a feature at Nashville while leading because he had to go to the Opry.
Here' the part Cody didn't tell. The weekly races in the mid-60's at the Nashville Fairgrounds were dominated by Coo Coo Marlin in a red '62 Chevy
#711. Marty was one of a few guys who could run with Coo Coo.
This particular night they started near the front, but on lap 5 Coo Coo spun out. He didn't hit anything, but of course he had to go to the rear of the field for the restart. He knew Marty was leading when he spun, and that with a clear track Marty would be hard to catch.
Coo Coo drove like a mad man, coming through traffic like crazy. The features were only 30 laps in those days. Coo Coo knew had passed about every car on the track but he still couldn't even see Marty. And just his luck, the race ran to the finish with no more cautions.
Marlin's Carter's Creek pit crew were waving at him, trying to get him to slow down, but Coo Coo was still in pursuit of the 777 Plymouth.
It was only after the checkered flag fell and Coo Coo was directed to victory lane that he found out what happened. Marty had pulled in and headed to the Opry and Coo Coo was chasing a car that was sitting in the pits!
Great story, Russ! Thanks!
Great story!
