orangeburg speedway was at the fairgrounds run by mr R E Jenkins; I raced there in hobby class from 1963-1969 most drivers also raced at North sc speedway owned and built by mr G T Llivingston who was in the business of earth moving ( fish ponds etc) You can see where the north speedway was from Hwy 321, (looks like a pond now) I think that it was one half mile. I bent an A frame one nite and left the car ( 1951 chevy) in the infield until the next sat, returned with an A frame and charged battery. Later on i did get a trailer and could get it back home. There were 9 tracks all associated with CARS ( carolina auto race schedule ) Summerville,Dillon,Charleston,Edisto (north) Goose Creek ( formely Cooper River)Florence Sumter ( HQ )Orangeburg, and Conway. I still have some memorbelia ( schedule ads, etc) Curtis Crider was the promoter for most of them. Clinnie Hyatt had a bounty out for Arnold Hutto at sumter. ( $50.00 ) Louies speed shop in north charleston was the local speed parts guy. He also fielded a 6 cylinder sedan chevy named the stagecoach for Leroy Yarborough (late model ) that outran its share of flatheads. Some of the drivers in different classes were Slick Gibbons, Jimmy Sullivan,Wayne Fralix, Rivers Murden, John Davis, Bill Rush,Sandy Smith,Gene Bilton, Charlie Ott,J B burbage, Oneal Livingston,Cookie CrosbyNeal Livingston,Virgil Templeton,Joe Lavender, Mutt Coker, there were many others, i dont know what year they shut down Orangeburg. Walt Knox did race at summerville Iwill add some Summerville names later thanks Vince Ellis

Walt Knox drove several different cars through the years at Summerville. I remember him in this #19. I have a 1974 program with him in a #88 Chevelle. I think he drove a #47 Chevelle around 1976, and a #90 Vega in the early 80's.The track in Orangeburg was at the fairgrounds. I remember it as a short and flat quarter mile with covered grandstands. I'm guessing they stopped running cars there in the mid 70's. Within the last few years, they have run moto-cross and go kart races.

Louie Weathersbee along with my father Henry Elrod and my uncle Jimmy Elrod fielded the stagecoach driven by Leeroy Yarbrough.
