She got back to the counter and hollered back at me "what was the name of the race again?" and I said Schaefer 300. She came back "Like the beer? I drank that in college!"
Trenton awarded matching trophies - one to the winning driver and one to the winning owner. Of course, in 43's case, the Pettys took home both pieces of hardware. Here's the matching trophy although the race name plate had fallen off it.
I wandered around snapping pics of everything else too. An hour or so into my tour, I asked her if she'd take my picture standing next to the case. She said yes but that she'd really like to get the trophy out for me. However, someone had "misplaced" her drill so she didn't really have any way to get to it. I swallowed hard and said um...uh...now that would be beyond cool.
I told him the condensed version of our Schaefer story also, and he had a good laugh. She took out the trophy and realized it was a bit rickety. She said she'd feel better if she sat it near me vs. giving it to me. Fine by me!

Then he said, "well if he came this damn far to see the thing seems like he ought to hold it up" to which I replied "now you're talking!"

Awesome!
Awesome post!!! Around three years ago, we went to the Level Cross shop to get the Flagstand from Lakewood Speedway for the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame. I met Richard and then went to the museum. After we told the nice ladies inside what we were doing, they gave us free admission plus a piece of chocolate. I took nearly 200 picture in there with my camera...but unfortunately later that year, I lost the camera at a show. Atleast my father took some pictures, but not nearly 200.
Wow! Thanks for such a wonderful, upbeat, post with all those great pictures!!! Can't wait to see more of your pictures and hear more of the story of that awesome visit. I would have to say those people at the museum and really accommodating. Thanks again.Tim
