Another legend, Bud Wamsley has passed away.Bud started racing in 1949. He drove the first Roadsters that had a brief run in this area. Bud won a 25-lap feature at Strawberry Hill (now RIR) in 1949. The following year, Richmond Stock Car Racing was formed with weekly racing at Royall Speedway (now Southside Spdway). Bud was a winner the first season of 1950. He, also, won in his #69 - '38 Ford Coupe at Strawberry Hill, Cockade City Speedway in Petersburg, Old Dominion Speedway in Manassas, and other tracks during the 1951 Season. In 1952, Bud won the track championship at the new NASCAR sanctioned one-fourth mile clay Richmond Speedway. Bud bested the late Joe Weatherly for the track title. Bud started a family and worked his dad's business, H.E.Wamsley Trucking, racing sporadically. In 1962, Bud's dad, brother-Howard Wamsley,Jr., hired legendary,Eddie Crouse, and campaigned for the NASCAR Modified National Championship. They as a team won the title in '62 and '63. Bud came out of retirement as a racer in 1970, racing his own car at Southside Speedway and South Boston Speedway. He, also, raced the one-half mile dirt Virginia Raceway, winning his final race, a 100 lapper in 1976.Back

I'm sure Bud and Eddie are talking over old times. Eddie told me when he lost the ride in the flying #11 he cried, but by doing so he got the ride in the #69 and #269 and won the National Modified champion title in 1962 and backed it up in 1963. Eddie Crouse was a close frend. Thank you Bud for your part in those championships.May GOD bless,Clyde Mangum
