When we were younger I think we all had our hero's or people we looked up to or idolized for me it was people such as Richard Petty, Tiny Lund, Cale Yarborough, Jr Johnson, Wendell Scott, Big Daddy Don Garlitts, Shirley Muldowney, and Don Prudohme, and Tom Mcgwein but I think the one person I looked up to the most and was my biggest hero was my oldest brother Larry Yardley he may not have been a big track champion with hundreds of wins under his belt but to me he was bigger than life the way he would drive his car around the track inspired me it was to me like watching a group of professional dancers take astage he could make his car do just about anything he wanted to .Over the years since I have gotten to meet a lot of my racing hero's...And I will say that even after all these years later that my 2most favorite hero's in my life are still my brother and my mom.Yes, I said my mom. They are the ones that introduced me to the world of fast cars and driving fast and even tho I remember my brother racing and don't remember any races my mom ran, she did race at a local track near us here called Speedbowl Park in Sterling Il.The track is gone now but the memories still remain of the stories she used to tell me of the races and the drivers there. Not much is ever said about the women that raced back then or even now but I think we owe them as much credit to the sport as the men even if they were not racers the women who backedtheir men in the sport need to be recognized also as the wives, the women that worked at the track weekly to make things happen. So can you tell me, do you remember your hero's as well as I remember mine?
I can't imagine two better heroes. Thanks for sharing.
Great post, Tony! You're so right about the ladies in racing. One of the finest in racing, who did not race is Francis Flock, widow of Tim Flock. Ms Francis is still supporting our racing heroes, doing everything she can to help keep the Racing Legends Medical Hardship Fund going. She is certainly a hero herself. Tony, thanks for a wonderful addition to the blog posts here. Yes, I remember my heroes very well and spend quite a bit of time writing about them and talking about them. In fact, I think you may have given me an inspiration for the Tuesday night radio show. If I decide to go that way, I'm going to use your name, if that is ok with you. I think you deserve credit for such a thought provoking post. Thanks, and keep your memories coming. I thrive on these memories.
