RAINY DAY, WARM HEARTS @ COLUMBIA SPEEDWAY

The chilliness and heavy down pours didnt stop me from having the opportunity to be privileged with some fascinating, historical racing stories. There was so much wonderful information shared but I will have to condense it otherwise there might be a book written instead of an article.Approximately at 11:00 a.m. this morning, I headed to Columbia Speedway to volunteer for the cleanup/restoration project that is currently underway. The trip began with clear skies and ended up with continuous heavy rain showers. Unfortunately, the weather disabled my opportunity to provide hands-on assistance to the group; however, this provided me with the chance to get some educational racing lessons. The old ticket office was serving as shelter for the volunteers so that is where I headed and stayed in place for the next couple of hours. The famous slogan When E.F. Hutton talks, people listen should be changed to When Tim Leeming speaks, you will listen because he is such a book of knowledge and experience. He has rubbed shoulders with the best and brightest in the racing industry and continues to have an infectious excitement about sharing his personal stories as well as opinions about the evolution of this phenomenal sport.I was astonished to learn that not only did Richard The King Petty race at Columbia Speedway but so did the history making Wendell Scott. Wendell Scott faced many obstacles during his racing career and to know that I was present at one of the tracks that he competed on was beyond my wildest dreams. Other notables that were discussed were Buck Baker, Pete Hamilton, and Tiny Lund.It was interesting to hear about the reasoning behind the attendance decline at most of the early race tracks due to the creation of the superspeedways, the evolution of the race cars chassis and the evolution of the engines especially the details about the HEMI engine. This is great information that I am glad Racers Reunion is able to share with the world because it is so important to understand the foundational aspect of this sport. The silent drive home allowed me to reflect on the stories that were shared while the rain poured outside around us. Yes, it was raining heavily along with being a little chilly but hearts were warmed inside that old structure with no windows or doors because the individuals gathered are all race advocates. I am looking forward to the Love Chevrolet Racers Reunion event in April because I will get to meet some true racing trailblazers. It will be AWESOME!Until next timeGear Up & Strap In For A Thrillin Ride

The"legendary" Tim Leeming is my husband and I still enjoy listening to his stories about racing. They are in his mind and more than that in his heart. Thank you Unique for such a professional and heartwarming story. It surely helps on a dreary day when we all need something positive and your article surely provided that. What a writer you are! Ann
