the 1969 Rebel 300 was the wildest of them all. Joe Weatherly was leading the race when the yellow came out for rain. he was leading and made a pit stop for fuel but most of the others didn"t the race was then stopped and rescheduled for the next week. Nascar said they would restart the race under caution which infuriated weatherly. a big argument insued and all week, he threatened to go to court to restart the race under green. Bob colvin got involved and swore they would run the fastet laps under caution ever. eventually they got it restarted then There was a grandstand built on stilts way above the 4th turn outside the guard rail. all the drivers wives and scorers were in the stand. Johnny Allen sailed over the guardrail taking out one half of the stands and the stairs leading up to the seats. the drivers nearly had a heart attack when they came around the turn and saw what had happened. Johnny wasn't hurt. I don't see how. the car was totaly folded up I stood at the rear end housing and could almost reach over the roll bars and touch the front bumper. a fire truck was brought in to get the people out of the stands. all were safe. Weatherly finally won the race but boy was that one to remember.
