Bird's-eye view of the "gem of the east" the legendary Wilson County Speedway on hyw 301 Wilson, NC. Supposedly the grandstands are still present, and motorcycles rallies have been staged on the grounds.....Sad.

I spent from 68 to 73 in wilson may sat. nights and sunday afternoons.farmer john mathews, don macon, bill taylor, mutt powell, glen mcduffie, glen simpkins , carl horton, jackie rogers, sam ard, joe huss, larry curry just to name a few.The only time I drove a race car on a track was there in 1970. Me and a guy from school had a 60 ford. he drove it and i put OIL in it. He came in from practice and told me to get inj it. It had to be the slowest car in the hobby class. So I take it on the track and as i go into the first turn here come to latemodels driven by bill taylor and farmer john powwersliding through the !st turn right beside me.That was the end of my racing career. LOLAnother good thing about WCS was that Parkers BBQ was down the road about half mile.

Brings tears to your eyes to know what was there... Superb late model racing in the 70s.
