Dargan Watts
Joe Lane at Myrtle Beach 1974
Joe Lane, who raced out of the Pee Dee area of South Carolina was one of the fan favorites wherever he raced. He competed and won races at Myrtle Beach, Columbia, Sumter, Hartsville, Fayetteville, Dillon, Hartsville-Darlington and Timmonsville to name just a few of the tracks where he would show up.
Dargan, as you know, Joe would race on dirt or ashpalt, and with the same car. He liked running big blocks at Myrtle Beach, and in the mid-70's seemed to focus more on the dirt 1/4 mile Conway (SC) Raceway.
Speaking of the beach's backstretch "wall", back when it was still dirt, Joe Lane and H.P. Larrimore got tangled up going into the 3rd turn. They both sailed off the turn, near the infamous 'gator hole' vanishing from sight. All that could be seen from the stands was the swaying of the pine trees tops!
