Rocket 100 Finale Saturday
The Rockingham Speedway will be the scene of the fifth and final Rocket 100 of the year this Saturday night October 7 th . Twenty four cars have gained starting positions and 16 more will qualify Saturday night to fill out the field.
Four different drivers have won 100 lap features races this year with no repeat winners. They are: Jeryl Best from Hartsville, S.C. , Bob Seymour of Kannapolis, Bob Webb of Rockingham and Bill Bostick of Ellerbe.
The Sportsman points are headed by John Sears and Troy Edwards. Both have won weekly features this year but havent been able to capture a bigger race.
Time trials will get underway at 7:30 P.M. and the features scheduled for 8:30 P.M.

Sportsman Rocket 100
100 lap feature: 1. John Sears
October 13, 1961 Richmond County Journal
This was the last points race for the 1961 season. The rest of the races at the speedway that year were held on Sunday.
An early season article in 1962 stated that Bobby Webb won the 1961 Sportsman Championship. This seems unlikely if the Oct. 6 th article on the last Rocket 100 was accurate. It stated John Sears and Troy Edwards headed the sportsman points going into the Oct. 7 th double points race which was won by Big John. If this were the case then John Sears would have had to won the points title. The Sept. 8 th article documented Burhead Nantz driving Webbs car because of a back injury. One of these reports are wrong but I have not been able to document which is correct.
I do not have a Points Champion for the Amateur division documented for the 1961 season.

This photo is from the John McNeill collection and notes Al Rivers as a 1961 Rocket 100 winner. Al was listed as competing in the Amateur division. On several occasions events called a Rocket 100 would be a 100 lap Sportsman race and a 50 lap Amateur race. This is most likely Al getting the trophy for winning the 50 lap Amateur feature during a Rocket 100 event as all of the Sportsman Rocket 100 winners have been documented. While no date is given this picture shows something odd. The two men on the other side of the car are Pete Brewer in the light shirt and Bernard Purvis in the dark shirt, they helped Al on that car in 1961. The odd thing is Barnyard, as Bernard was called, has on a long sleeve shirt when Al and Earl Dunn have on short sleeves. That may not seem odd to most but to me it is. You see I remember Barnyard and Bobby Lambert most always wearing tee shirts all season long. Cant tell you how many times I noticed those two gentleman wearing tee shirts while most everyone else was wearing coats.
Dad still has that trophy. That is Pete Brewers car (which you indicated in your comment)that Dad drove to that win.
