Rockingham Speedway 1962
1962 brought in a new era at Rockingham Speedway with introduction of the Late Model division. In the past about the only difference between the Limited Sportsman and Amateur divisions was the engine size as both groups ran pre-war coupes and coaches. These cars will still be the mainstay in the Amateur division using flat head V8s and overhead valve six cylinders. The Rookie division will again complete the field of cars competing at the speedway.
Also new for 1962 is the formation of the Independent Racing Association (IRA). John McNeills IRA will replace the Rockingham Speedway Association as the sanctioning body.

The article below states that Bill Bostick and Flukie Hawkins finished first on this date. It does not state which races they won. It could have been that Bill won the LM heat and Flukie won the LM feature. Or it could have been that Bill won the heat race and Flukie the feature. (Last year Hawkins nickname was spelled Flukey, I dont know which is correct).

This ad appeared in the Friday, May 4, 1962 Richmond County Journal and states that Johnny Newton won this race. As I have not been able to document April the 1 st or the 15 th this would have to have been one of these dates but I cant confirm which one is correct.

60 Cars Compete In Races Saturday
Along with the battle for the point lead and eventual track championship in the late model division, fans at Rockingham Speedway Saturday night will again see cars literally demolished in the second demolition derby this season.
All cars will be turned loose in a fenced area and the last car running under its own power will be declared the winner.
A four way battle for the track championship has developed as Bill Bostick of Ellerbe leads J.D. McDuffie of Sanford by only 15 points and Bobby Webb of Rockingham and John Sears of Ellerbe both are within easy striking distance highlights the racing activities at Rockingham.
Bob Seymour of Kannapolis was tabbed the probable driver of a 1955 Studebaker in Saturday nights race card. Thought to be the first Studebaker to be run here.
At least sixty cars are scheduled to compete in Saturday nights seven event race card. The amateur and rookie drivers will join the late model sportsman to make up Saturday nights race card.
