Should Richard Childress Be Punished for Punching Kyle Busch?

Current NASCAR

The difference of now compared to "then". When I raced...and Johnny I know it was true when you raced....we all knew we when we entered the pits we were subject to "engage"...or be "engaged" in physical contact of sorts "off the track." Some on this site have called that barbaric. Barbaric as it was...if you may call it that...it was fact and has been part of the make-up of auto racing since the beginning.

At one of my regular tracks (Volunteer Speedway)...back in the day...one was subject to a $500.00 fine for fighting outside your pits. Think about the logic. Made sense to us then. So if neither Kyle or Richard were in their respective pits...by this rule they both would be fined and would be back to racing. And one or the other would know better how to govern themselves at the track. Or at least they would have a better understanding of the consequences. (ie...headlock...fine...etc).

I realize NASCAR can't let this go without doing something. I just think they should levy the fine and go racing.

What's wrong with that?

I found this photo in the article: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/auto-racing/nascar/season-recaps/1970s/1978-nascar.htm

I do not know who to give photo credit to.

Sometimes it is really hard to express feelings especially when there are feelings of loss involved. I think many old school fans who complain (including myself) have to go through that...somewhat like one grieving the loss of a loved one. After the grief, things are never the same, but tolerable...and even enjoyable if one allows others and other things to enter their life.

I know, you may think that is corny. So what! Call me corny, I don't care. I have watched folks air out their grief and deal with their losses (I'm talking about the loss of racing the way it was when we liked it the most) here on this site now for over three years. RacersReunion is for some...simply put....therapeutic.

Many have asked me what I wanted to accomplish with RR. One of my favorite answers it to build a bridge between the past and the present. We, as a group, are figuring out how to preserve our beloved history and still enjoy racing. This is proof to me the bridge construction is progressing. Racing needs us old pharts whether or not they are willing to admit it. And we all need "big-time auto racing" to succeed....whether or not we are willing to admit it.

And now that Charlotte Motor Speedway has taken some of The Legends otherwise tightly held coins and given him and his grandsons memories they will carry for the rest of their lives.....I know there is hope.

No doubt, PKL....Buddy is the king of notable quotes. Thanks for sharing these. I think I have heard him mention all of them at one time or another.

When it comes to quotable folks in NASCAR, there have been any number of them, but to me, the one that is always the most fun to quote is Buddy Baker. Buddy always had a way with words that most folks envy. Just a simple, down-home boy, but always with a twinkle in his eye. Here are just a few from Big Buddy that I've always loved, but there are hundreds...maybe thousands. I miss him!

"Ernie Irvan could go bear hunting with a switch. He ain't never afraid."

"With ten to go, I didn't have a code of ethics."

"I never lost my job while I was leading a race."

On Rick Hendrick and Felix Sabates - "Well I don't know which one has more money but I'll tell you what. Either one could burn a wet mule with hundred dollar bills."

On a newly re-paved Darlington - "The new asphalt is like putting a tuxedo on a rattlesnake."

On the Gibson Guitar Buddy himself won at Nashville - "I was like a pig with a wristwatch"

On racing at Hickory Speedway "Short track racing is by all means a contact sport"

"My wife cooked cabbage last night. I asked her, 'My Lord, how could you get an ass in a pot?"

My favorite one was not a "public" comment but came in one of the Charlotte races...can't remember the date. Was listening to Bill Elliot's Radio channel...Ernie was spotting for Bill. There was a crash coming off turn 2 and Ernie was screaming into the radio "Bill, crash on the back stretch, go low...Bill....Bill...Bill go low!". Bill replied, "Ernie, shut the f___ up...its me!"

Another cool "non-quote" (compare this to today's drivers)...in the same race...was listening to Dale Earnhardt's radio. Not much was ever said...but coming down pit road under caution he (Dale) said to Childress, "Put two rounds in the right rear". Nothing more was said until he was going into three after the green Dale said. "Richard, did you put two in?" After a brief moment of silence... Childress said, "No, Dale, we took two out". Nothing else was said. Can you imagine what Kurt Busch would have said?
