Your Mileage May Vary

General

The Piedmont Racing Expo and RacersReunion was big fun! It was and honor to be part of this event to recognize the history of the Raleigh Fairgrounds Speedway. We also were very excited to unveil our new Nexus Marketing Partnership at this event. The products were well received and we expect this to be a great relationship.I was reminded just how well Nexus Fuel Products perform on this trip. On the way to Raleigh (appx 200 miles) without Nexus Formula 7in the tank my 2006 Ford F150 got a pathetic 14.2 miles per gallon...at a cost of $3.00 per gallon. On the way back ...with Nexus in the tank...it got 17.1 mpg. Nevertheless, I think it saved me $7.00 on the return trip. considering I used half a tank...that equates to $14.00 savings per tank for a treatment that cost $6.00....hmmmm. I like the math.Of course one has to consider the return was down hill.

Jeff, I came across this web site a little less than a year ago, and I feel like I had found a long lost family member. I thought that I was the only one that yearned for the 60's and 70's. I never did take a camera with me back then, so I thought all those wonderful cars were lost in time. To see all the photos that EVERYONE had put on this web site is for ANYONE to look at is wonderful. And then to have discussions with others that were right there with me,watching the same things that I did is AMAZING! THANK YOU,Jeff and all the other members of RR for helping this old man remember some of the best times of my life.

Forum Conduct and What We Are About

Administrative

In the time this site has been around we have enjoyed some great discussions and broken down many subjects into great and sometimes lengthy detail. We have not always agreed with each other, but should we? I think not. Where is the fun in that?

The one thing that has been most impressive about this group is the general conduct. I, as have many of you, have visited many sites and forums where bad language and name calling is tolerated. I do not attend those sites for those reasons and have not allowed and will not allow this site to become THAT kind of site.

Thank all of you for respecting each other ...and each others opinions. That is what makes us different. That is what we're about. Now stir the pot....or puddin...or what ever you choose.

Jeff

Your opinion please

From time to time I like to change the appearance of the site. Those of you who have been around for a while know this...and probably also know I like the boldness of the black background. The recent changes with the charcoal content modules are creating some problems with the text editor when pasting articles...etc. For some reason the text editor does not always convert or allow you to convert the text to white...so it will appear on the dark background. This is a bug we've reported to the ning team. But in the mean time...take a look at the Open Wheel, Dirt, and Local sites to see what you think about those. I changed the appearance yesterday using white content modules to make posting...and possibly reading easier. Let me know which you like best.

thanks,

Jeff

NASCAR Trending report using Goggle research

Current NASCAR

The chase, the top 35...or whatever number they lock in, and the lucky dog, is simply "managed" results and not racing. Ernest, you're so right. Leading laps, winning races, and kicking everybody's butt every time you go to the race is the concept that made the sport grow in the first place. If "Go fast or go home" isn't part of the equation ...it just ain't racin. Hey that rhymed...I feel a new poem coming on.Yes, John, every crew chief I have spoken to hates the whole spec car idea. Great crew chiefs advanced this sport with their "creativity".I honestly do not know how NASCAR can turn this around without a complete overhaul. There are so many of the older core fans who have lost interest....and so many of the here-today-and-gone-tomorrow newer fans who lack the passion once present by a brand loyal and dependable audience....it is going to be a rough road ahead. But, if an overhaul is eminent, the sooner the process begins...the better for all. The gap between the older fans and the present way is widening with each passing year. There is now an obvious generational disconnect.Oh well...I could ramble on and on about this....I suppose we all could. It will never be what it was. I'm still a fan...or try to be...and I want so much to see the sport once again march forward. It was and is a major part of my life.

Help. The Legend has a problem.

General

Reminds me of a story from my past...lol. Once upon a time...While traveling on US 23 near Johnson City, TN I came upon a man who quickly stepped almost in front of me... facing me on the right side of the road holding what appeared to be a weapon aimed at me. He was standing with is feet a little further than shoulder-width apart...one foot actually in the traffic lane (across the white line). He had both hands on this "weapon" and was clearly aiming it at me. I immediately locked up the brakes, ducked below the dash, and came to a sliding stop about one foot from his "original" position.. When I got the nerve to look over the steering wheel he had moved...apparently rather quickly to the ditch. He turned out to be a police officer. The weapon turned out to be a radar gun. Yup, they will haul yer butt in for that. But I got off...he was reprimanded. Apparently there had been other complaints. He seemed to hold that against ME for some time.

Driving a racecar to the track?

Stock Car Racing History

This is one of those cool stories that Smokey (personally) denied....saying he had no idea how it got started. Greg Zyla reported that he actually drove across the infield onto a trailer with no gas tank...either way...a very cool story.

John Craft said:

Smokey drove HOME from the track (out of the garage area, across the infield, through the tunnel and across town to his Beach Street shop)in 1968 after his , ahem, creatively configured 1966 Chevelle (the third and final one he built) was dinged in tech by Gazaway (whom Smokey lovingly referred to as " that comic book reading S.O.B .*")during Daytona 500 qualifying. According to the papers the next day(via Bill France), thatlittle jauntwas accomplished without the assistance of a gas tank. According to Smokey , only the fuel cell can was missing and the bladder was still in place. We report; you decide.

*(Abbreviated for public consumption, Smokey had no such compunctions)
