Pet Peeves

It makes me sick to hear them (NASCAR) to start talking about changing things every time somebody has a good year. Pastor Ken is right in my opinion. Roush was just lobying to have a mulligan added to the chase...to allow the teams to throw out one bad finish. WHY????? It's never going to be perfect...leave it alone!!! The guy with the most points should win. So what if somebody has a good run for a while...someone will figure out a way to catch him....sooner or later....or he'll eventually retire..lol....like the King did.

This is great, Jon. You hit most of mine. I know this is not what you intended, but I have to tell this story. I remember one night at Kingsport Speedway....when it was dirt...I got there late and they wouldn't let me qualify....qualifying had not even started, but they would not let me go and told me I had to start in the back. I did. I won the race. I was protested and sent to the impound area. At 3 am after they had taken my engine down to the crank, the inspector said this engine is legal. The late Bear Hunley was the main guy then (we later became very good friends), and said " I don't care, I'm calling him illegal. I'll teach these Newport guys to come up here and take these Kingsport guys money". To which I replied. "Newport...I'm from Kingsport!". The tech guy gave me the money they gave him to tear down the engine and said" You've officially been screwed. Maybe this money will be enough for you to buy the gaskets and seals to put your engine back together." I stayed up the rest of the night and "re-assembled" my engine so I could make the race the next night at Bulls Gap. I made the race and finished second behind Jimmy Owens.I continued to try to fight the protest and ruling at Kingsport, but could not get Hunley to change it. You see...he was so sure I was illegal that he didn't collect the protest money from his buddy who owned the second place car. He later admitted all this to me....and became one of my supporters, giving me advise occaisionally, when I made the move up to NASCAR Late Model Stocks. He was a legendary driver/owner/track manager, but gave me a screwing I've never forgotten.

Finished Darlington gettin ready for Hillsborough

Stock Car Racing History

Thanks to all the members who stopped by our tents at the Darlington Festival to say hello...and special thanks to all those who helped us spread the word about RacersReunion. We had a good crew there with Ray Lamm, Tim Leeming, Robbie Solesbee, and Jim Seay helping us out. This was our first attempt at trying to be a "vendor", but we survived and managed to get some great celebrity interviews with Rex White, David Pearson, Bondy Long, Bobby Allison, Donnie Allison, Reb Wickersham, Perry Allen Wood, Gene Hobby, Sybil Scott, and Tim Leeming. Now it's time to focus on the BIG ONE...Hillsborough!!! September 26th and 27th at the Occoneechee- Orange Speedway. We all need to go to this event and support our friends at the Historic Speedway Group. See the events calender for details or go to www.historicspeedwaygroup.org

Vintage Racing Photo Gallery

Administrative

Just in case you have not already noticed, we have created a "Vintage Racing Photo Gallery" in the Racing Photo section of the site. We did this so that "history buffs" would not have to wade through current racing photos to see the older stuff. All photos are viewed by the administrative staff to determine if they meet certain criteria to be included in the "Vintage Gallery".

Stock Car Racing History

Jim,I love hearing about racing back then. I interviewed Charlie Mincey a while back as well as Raymond Parks. I was just now listening, on RacersReunion Radio, to Jim Seay's interview with Tiger Tom Pistone. All those guys tell some very interesting stories about the era. I would love to have you write some of your recollections of racing back then for inclusion on the site. A great way to do that would be write them in the "Blog" section. also we will put you on our list of radio interviews either for the upcoming "live" show...or in regular programming.Thank you very much for sharing your experiences with us.Jeff
