I missed being there, too, Bill...I'll definitely be back.

Great photos, thanks Bill, and Dave.
Congratulations and thanks to MAVTV on their coverage of the LUCAS oil Winternationals from Tampa's East Bay Raceway. MAVTV, a division of LUCAS oil, is smartly filling the FOX/SPEEDvoid. Dave Despain's even on board!
What I'll always remember of the '68 "500"was the Petty's vinyl top.........AND Richard climbing out of the cockpit to "work" on it! Don't see that much anymore.
Dave, this has always been a riveting story for me. Smokey does go into detail in this book, and had an immediate explanation...bad aero. As Smoke indicated, "it was 1959 who knew anything about aerodynamics.........?" But Smokey did, or knew more than most. He recognized the Sumar Special's streamlined body was little more than an air foil, and would createliftinstead of down-force. Smokey stated the car would "fly the front end" and reading these accounts, his predictions sounds correct. The other part of the story, not mentioned here, was the "deal". According to Smokey, Bill France would re-instate Marshall to NASCAR (he'd banned Marshall "for life" in the early '50's) if he could set a closed-course record of 180 mph. Marshall Teague served as NASCAR's first treasurer, brought the PURE oil company (he was a PURE dealer in Daytona), AND Hudson Motor company to NASCAR. In so doing, Marshall Teague introduced the NASCAR-sponsorship model that been in use....ever since. Smokey does point out that for all his efforts, Marshall did get a grandstand at Daytona named in his honor.
Patrick, very familliar! I was about 10 years ahead of you, but mine is the same story....proms, dates, stick-and-ball detractors......Wide World of Sportsclips! I'm that empty seat too, and I've moved on too....the dirt world is so refreshing, and so reminiscent of pre-Chase/TV NASCAR. Richard said it best in his now famous "Danica" interview......NASCAR is now a Show. On-track action is not really the focus, anymore. The show, along with high-end track-side restaurants and shopping venues are now more important.
Can you say "Pie in the sky....?" None of this grandiose project could, in any way, be related to the special credit created by congress that was so selective only ISC qualifies, could it? So, if we turn Daytona into some mixed-use real estate-shopping-dining-complex......that'll be the cat's meow? Hell-O! Seem's we've heard that line of rationale before. Never mind the racing, it's theexperiencethat'll lure the modern fan....and by experience we mean shopping and townhouses and more shopping and some high-end restaurants and souvenirs!
There's no parking at Daytona now....there's acres and acres and more acres of "space" but it a'int parking space....Nope, the intrepid fan has to "find" his own parking space at the K-Mart etc.across the street, and pay accordingly. There was a time when race fans, (me) camped in the (former) parking lot. But we were there for the racing.....didn't have a clue what a Hard-Rock was..........thought it was that thing my sleeping bag was on.
I agree, BB...it's always been about money, and this new system will really separate the men form the boys. Only the mega teams, and there's maybetwo of them, can afford to win every week. So, after all is said and done, it'll be a lot more of the same.
I like the new emphasis on winning. Teams are going to have to 'get up on the wheel' every race..... may be a pressure cooker, but some will rise to the occasion.
