Toccoa Speedway...In search of this mysterious lady's beginnings!!!

Stock Car Racing History

Christy, I'd encourage you to contact (fellow RR.com member) Mr. Richard "Papermen"Pearson, Sr. He's quite the expert on north Georgia dirt racing, its history, w/pictures too.

The 2013 Daytona 500

Current NASCAR

The promo machine was in overdrive, and it was successful, but probably more akin to a one-hit wonder. The racing's got to improve, and Danica will not be the sensation as the tour slugs forward at Phoenix, Vegas, Bristol, etc. etc. Fortunately, for Daytona, the 'Gen-6' car was a curiosity and was milked to the max, as was Danica-mania. But, again, it all worked, and I found myself pulling for her. (Mr. 5-time does not move the needle, at least for me, and generates very little promotional ummph) Danica drove a very impressive race: ran top 10 all day, pit stops OK, and was definitely in a position to win in the closing laps..... (IMO) she could have won.

I was internet-listening to the Nationwide race on MRN, (could NOT find it on a radio station) and the severity of the last-lap crash was also downplayed. Reading between the lines, one could tell it was very VERY serious. Injured fans is worse case scenario, and to me, thatwas the weekend's major story

A Quattlebaum Production at Daytona

Current NASCAR

Dave, I didn't watch, but unless one is a seasoned Daytona-ite, there's little chance anyone, that is anyone that would be interested in Saturday night style late model racing, would or could understand the labyrinth of navigating Daytona Speedway access/parking/etc. etc. etc. This idea appears to be a weak effort to (somehow) dethrone New Symrna.

NASCAR will no longer provide attendance estimates

Current NASCAR

On the attendance front.........Until this past weekend, I had not been to Daytona since 1971. Granted, there were lots of changes and commercial development around the speedway, but the most surprising change (to me) was the lack of normal parking spaces. Our group was trying to find a parking space, of course we were turned away at the "main" entrance (hello) so, we made one complete "lap" around the entire speedway complex. Every single open area, is 1. paved, 2. Fenced/gated, 3. Designated "motor homes, trams, bicycles, motorcycles, etc. etc. etc.....everything except the run-of-the-mill FAN has been assigned a parking space. We wound up parking, $30.00 thank you very much, across International Speedway Blvd. on the back row of a commercial shopping center, adjacent to theHobby Lobby. Hey, NASCAR, ya reckon having NO parking space for (regular-everyday-drive-up)fans might just relate to the current state of the sport? We were there for the ARCA/Sprint Unlimited race, and parking was an issue.....just imagine parking for the 500.

Sprint Unlimited

Current NASCAR

NASCAR's apparently convinced the inside track to the modern fan involves social media, fan interactionand electronic gizmos.......and throw in the fact that Sprint is promoting the same idea.........
