Google Earth - Charlotte Motor Speedway

General

Google earth photos are not up-to-the minute. I'd guess it's a show from 2010 at the very latest.

Drive to end hunger...huh?

General

Ahhhh, it's an awareness issue....so, the idea is not to, actually, eliminate hunger...that's the apparent domain of the NASCAR faithful. And a partnership with hungry-man Jeff Gordon......it simply can't miss. Why, I'll bet, the world will have a full stomach in no time! Why didn't the Red Cross and all those other benevolent organizations think of this before?

What in the wide world of sports does the AARP, the hungry, and NASCAR have in common? Not too much. My guess would involve some high-ranking AARP big-wig that happens to be a NASCAR fan, or being leveraged, accordingly. And how does a 30-or-so-million dollar sponsorship help the hungry? Seems the AARP or whoever, could just spend the big bucks, they apparently have, directly, on those in need. Marketing at its best and worst.

Stock Car Racing History

Good stuff, Dave, thanks for sharing. I always wanted to attend a Martinsville double header, but never made it. I'd wear out the pages ofStock Car Racingmagazine's accounts of those classic events, though. As successful as those events were, you'd think M'ville would be interested in reviving them.

High Point Speedway - 1941

Historic Speedways and Ghost Tracks

Good work, Robert. We had Bill Blair, Jr. on "Racing Through History" (3/8/11) to discuss the High Point and Tri-City speedways. High Point speedway could have been a very significant player in (ultimately) NASCAR and stock car racing, had not World War II intervened.

Dave, come to think of it, the train was not a bad idea.

Rockingham "Race Train" - Washington, DC to the Track

Current NASCAR

Dave, I remember 60's-era Rockingham ticket brochures promoting the various transportation options......TRAIN, PLANE (dirt landing strip off turn 1&2), and AUTOMOBILE (conveniently located on US-1) In later years, after the construction of Rockingham Dragway, the drag strip was used as the race-day airport.
