Last month, Tim posted two Racing Minute entries about the split Virginia 500 at Martinsville. The move of the 2nd half of the Martinsville race to April 30th by Clay Earles and NASCAR didn't sit well with Darlington promoter, Bob Colvin. Let the legal briefs fly! My guess, however, is a phone call here and an envelope of cash there probably made things A-OK by May 6.
Ta da! Southern 500...

I know David Ragan has one previous win. But this one with an independent team still has to be considered an upset. His win has to be put in the same conversation as Bobby Hillin Jr., Ron Bouchard, Dick Brooks, James Hylton, Lennie Pond, and Phil Parsons. Right?
Keselowski was grousing afterwards about Ragan lining up in the wrong line for the last restart. Ryan Newman was bent - literally and emotionally - about plate track racing and the NASCAR brass. Danica is likely giving Ricky the cold shoulder tonight for helping initiate a race altering wreck. Fans were upset with FOX's commercials and the annoyance of the talking heads. NASCAR officials and fans at the track had to deal with tons of rain. Just another normal weekend of frustrations at a Talladega. Nothing new, right? Ha.
Matter of fact, even King Richard was bent at the rules makers way back in 1974. Tim Leeming featured the 1974 Talladega 500 in his May 5 Racing Minute. Richard Petty eked out a third place finish in that race - nothing to sneeze at for most folks. But the King wasn't happy because of a poor qualifying run. He ended up having to draft his way all day to salvage the third. He had these remarks after his qualifying run.

A Regan Ragan Dega Double this weekend. Incredible. Now if we could only get a Reagan-like guy back in Washing... whoops, flirting with ROE.
Perhaps 2 memories blended into one?
Tar Heel Speedway near Level Cross NC hosted only three races. All were in the 1963 season, and all were won by Petty Engineering cars - 2 by High Point's Jim Paschal and the third one by The King. Today's blog post is about Paschal's win in round 2 of the three-parter in '63. Read on for more:

Dadgum it, burned by Getty captions again. The above photo of Pearson was shown as dated August 9, 1974. With his holding a Winston 500 trophy, I knew that date wasn't correct. I figured they at least got the year, track, and driver correct. Well, track and driver were correct but not year. The one above is from 1972 Winston 500 - Pearson's 1st of 3 consecutive Winston 500 wins.
Here is a pic of Pearson in victory lane at the 1974 Winston 500. - Gadsden Times
Reviving this post after a year.
The pace lap showing Pearson and Bettenhausen on the front row and George Follmer and Dan Daughtry on the second row.
And they're off!
Pearson collects his trophy with an interesting photo capture through the trophy's acrylic.
