May 2, 1971: Baker Doubles-Up Darlington

Stock Car Racing History

Today I posted another entry in my on-going blog series about wins by Petty Enterprises drivers OTHER than Richard Petty. On May 2, 1971, the Gentle Giant Buddy Baker won the Rebel 400 at Darlington driving a Petty Enterprises, factory-supported, white #11 Dodge Charger. He'd won the previous Darlington race - the 1970 Southern 500 - in a Cotton Owens' Dodge. Read on for more:

Racing History Minute - May 1, 1964

Stock Car Racing History

I'll append a re-run link to a blog post about another race on May 1 to this thread. May 1, 1983: Richard Petty wins the Winston 500 at Talladega for the 2nd of only two Cup wins at the track.

The race is better known for Phil Parson's crazy flip in Johnny Hayes' #66 Skoal Pontiac in only his 2nd career Cup start.

I think this may be my favorite Lee Roy pic (from Ray Lamm ). 1969 Southern 500. Can only imagine what was said in that moment.

And here is a news clipping from the Spartanburg Herald about 'crafty' LeeRoy's win.

April 30, 1966 - Rebel 400 footage

Stock Car Racing History

Here is some footage from the 64 Southern 500. As you note, the footage shows Pearson qualifying in a black roofed #6 Dodge. He qualified 2nd to Richard Petty (who chose the outside line to start). When the racing begins, Pearson is inside on the front row in a red roofed car.

April 30, 1966 - Rebel 400 footage

Stock Car Racing History

For you east coasters, I'm a bit late. But for those of us in the CDT time zone, I'm able to slip this one on April 30 with about 20 minutes to spare.

Earlier, Tim Leeming referenced The King's win in the Rebel 400 at Darlington on April 30, 1966. I blogged about his win on the race's anniversary a year ago here:

http://bench-racing.blogspot.com/2012/04/april-30-this-day-in-petty-history-part.html

Coincidentally, just yesterday I was given a DVD with snippets of a handful of races from years gone by. My pulse quickened when I noticed the lead segment was the 1966 Rebel 400. It took me a while tonight to copy the clip to my PC, upload it to Vimeo, and then make it available for embedding. But here it is - enjoy some wonderful memories from victory number 43 for the driver of car number 43.
