The Vanishing Redneck / The Vanishing Race Fan

Stock Car Racing History

One, I'm not sure I've spent $70,000 in TOTAL for the vehicles I've owned in my life - much less one.

Two, I assure you no vehicle in which I'm riding - either as a driver or a passenger - shall be playing Carrie Underwood. If I ask Jesus to Take The Wheel, I'll need him to do so just long enough for me to throw her CD out da winder.

But I do remember cruising the streets in my youth in my hand-me-down, high mileage 1965 Dodge Dart with mo' money tied up in my stereo than in the car. Ohhh yeahhhh. A CRAIG AM/FM auto-reverse cassette deck, an Audiovox amp/7-band equalizer, and Jensen 6x9s in the back. Cranking 38 Special's Wild Eyed Southern Boys. A definite teenaged urban redneck.

R.I.P. CECIL GORDON # 24

Stock Car Racing History

The original 24. Flash Gordon. Its amazing the difference in opportunities afforded the 2 Gordons who piloted a 24. One of the more unique fonts Cecil ran for his 24 is one that resembled Kyle Petty's numerals from Petty Enterprises. Cecil ran this font in the early 80s. Even after asking folks like Mike Beam and Steve Hmiel, I've never been able to confirm if he bought this Mopar ... and the KP numeral decals ... from the Pettys. But it seems awfully similar to be just a coincidence.

vs. Kyle Petty's number (credit Jerry Bushmire for photo)

Wonder if that's the same Stan Starr that designed this jewel. Complete opposite of big ol' bus.

20 Years Before Talladega, Bobby Allison Crashed Through Grandstand Fence in 1967

Stock Car Racing History

And here is another AP wire story from the race with only a brief mention of Allison's wreck. GNA search isn't very cooperative with returns for this race. Have tried "capital city", "capitol city", "richmond petty", "richmond allison", etc. and haven't had much success. Even struck out with search for papers from Spartanburg, Daytona, and Birmingham papers from that era.

Petty's Sept 1967 win at Richmond wasn't one I blogged too deeply about. I mainly mentioned it & included a copy of the scanned article provided by Jerry Bushmire. But with this backdrop, I may need to edit / update it.

Historical Marker at Middle Georgia Raceway

Stock Car Racing History

Last November, I included a mention of the pop festival in my blog entry about Richard Petty's 1970 win at Middle Georgia.

Instead of a marker for Jimi Hendrix, I think they need to install one for that well-hidden still.

Check out the lower left of my Grave Marker!

Stock Car Racing History

Is that a surround sound speaker in the center? Are you going to have FOX's Crank It Up 6' under in the after life? If so, I'll bring a group of school age kids through your cemetery on Halloween and whisper Boogity Boogity Boogity just to see you jump out of of your grave.
