Grand American race #4 of 1970 was held at Lakewood Speedway, a 1 mile dirt oval near Atlanta, Georgia. Tiny Lund put his Camaro on the pole with Jim Paschal alongside. As Tiny and Jim led the field into turn one in a cloud of dust the 9 th place starter Bobby Wilson got his Camaro crossed up and spun collecting the rest of the field. Only 8 drivers avoided the accident with the cars of David Boggs, Jimmy Capps, Bobby Fleming and Ernie Shaw damaged too much to continue. When the race continued Lund led the first 35 laps before Ken Rush went out front for ten laps. When Tiny went back to the lead on lap 46 he held it the rest of the way to claim his 3 rd win in a row. !969 Grand Touring Champion Ken Rush was second the only other car on the lead lap.

Twenty one cars took the green with 14 running at the finish. Lund collected $1,200 of the $8,760 purse. There were 2 cautions for 14 laps.

What does it take to be called a HERO?

Stock Car Racing History

Darren,

As old school as it might be my Dad is my hero. I love him because of who he is but he is my hero because of what he is. Those qualities and characteristics you listed. I've posted it before but this poem speaks of those qualities being displayed.

The test of a man is the fight that he makes.

The grit that he daily shows,

The way that he stands on his feet and takes

Fate's numerous bumps and blows.

A coward can smile when there is naught to fear

When nothing his progress bars,

But it takes a man to stand up and cheer

While some other fellow stars.

It's the knocks that you take and the jolts you get

The shock that your courage stands,

The hour of sorrow and vain regret,

The prize that escaped your hands

That test your mettle and prove your worth.

It isn't the blows that you deal

But the blows you take on this good old earth

That show if your stuff is real.

Thanks Dave. I could not remember why Paschal did not return to the race after running out of fuel. This report helps clear that up.

South Boston Speedway

South Boston, Virginia

Sunday, March 15, 1970

Grand American race #3 of 1970 was held at South Boston Speedway, a 3/8 mile paved oval. Tiny Lund started on the pole but it was Jim Paschal who started alongside that led the first 82 laps. Lund then led 2 laps before Wayne Andrews went to the front thru lap 113. Paschal went back out front and appeared to be well on his way to victory until lap 247 when his Javelin slowed and headed for the pits. This put Andrews in the lead with Lund limping along on 6 cylinders in second. Each time he went down the front stretch he would look toward pit road to see if the crew was ready for a splash and go but all he saw was GO on the pit board. With victory in sight Waynes Cougar coughed and ran out of fuel allowing Lund to claim his second win of 1970 and making it 2 in a row in his Ronnie Hopkins prepared Camaro. Lund garnered $1,200 of the $8,350 purse.

Andrews pitted and was able to claim 3 rd behind T.C. Hunt. Paschal did not return to the track after pitting reporting ignition trouble. When questioned after the race about not pitting for fuel Andrews car owner Reid Shaw said they had run there last year without taking on fuel. Last year they had run a 289 with 2 four barrels and a 302 with only one four barrel this time. They were surprised by the decrease in fuel mileage.

Twenty six cars took the green and 14 were running at the finish before a reported crowd of 1,200. There were 7 cautions for 41 laps.
