Countdown to Daytona
Current NASCAR
Richard Brown 1973 Grand National East
I look forward each week to Racing Through History and enjoy them all. Last Tuesday's show was one of the special ones. Fastest two hours on radio.
Chase, Very fitting you posted a win by a veteran on the anniversary of Pearl Harbor. I went with dad to the Pancake Breakfast to Honor Veterans this past Saturday at the NC Aviation Museum Hall of Famein Asheboro. Helping serve guest were local Boy Scouts. The scout leader was introducing some of the scouts to a group of WWII veterans and I was very grateful to see the honor and respect those young boys showed those elderly gentlemen. The heart of America is still beating in fly over country.
Chase, When I saw Tiny and H.B. Bailey in the Alamo 200 lineup I thought it might have been a Grand American race I had never heard of but turns out it was an IMSA GT race held at night on the road course, muchlike the Grand American Paul Revere 250 at Daytona.
1 Juan Izquierdo, Daniel Muniz, Mustang
2 Peter Gregg, Hurley Haywood, Porsche
3 Dan Moore, Gary Bishop, Mustang
4 Dick Durant, Mustang
5 Jim Locke, Porsche
6 Pete Conrad, Bill Cuddy, Porsche
Grand American regular H.B. Bailey finished 15th and Buck Baker finished 17th, both driving Firebirds.
1971 Grand American Champ Tiny Lund was there in his #55 Camaro but recorded no laps and was credited with 23rd andGA part timerRoy Stamey was 24th.
In '68 some road course events ran the SCCA TransAm cars and Grand Touring cars together. While not exactly the same the cars they were a closer match than the '71 GA cars and the IMSA cars. In '72 the Talladega GA race was a combination event.
Tim, Thanks for giving us regular RR members an opportunity to give our thoughts on this. I'm glad it is not something I have to decide on myself. I'm thankful we have a place like RR to come and learn aboutand share racing history. Without a place like RR where the info. can be easily shared and stored a lot of it would be lost. The history of stock car racing is what brought me to this site and not just Nascar racing history. I enjoy both. I have made many friends because of RR that I might not have met otherwise. For me when it comes to Nascar history the 90's are current but opening it up to 2003 did not take away from my enjoyment of the site because that era has not dominated the discussions. I have more in common with the "old timers" than with current Nascar and if the site were to become dominated by new Nascar stuff I would loose interest in a hurry. I like the idea of a current Nascar section. That gives me the choice of what era I want to focus on.
With every passing day history becomes a longer story. We live in the present, as it should be, so when we look back it is very helpful to be able to look in the era we are looking for so we will not miss the present while looking back.
Johnny, I have never seen any videos but that does not mean there are none. I do remember Wide World of Sports broadcasting an event at the Stadium. I did not get to see it but as I remember it was in 1971 and was probably one of the combination races that had Grand National and Grand American cars entered. May have been the one Bobby Allison won, can't remember. Dad had friends in Arizona that called when they saw the race on TV.
