Bristol 300 7/20/1968

Stock Car Racing History

BRISTOL 300

Bristol, Tn. July 20, 1968

The 10 th Grand Touring race of 1968 was held at the Bristol Motor Speedway and was 300 laps on the 1/2 mile paved oval. Bunkie Blackburn won the pole position in Smokeys Camaro, at least I think it was Smokeys Camaro. One report I have list a Camaro and I know Bunkie had driven the car earlier but I also have a report that says he drove a Cougar. Donnie Allison started on the outside of the front row in his Huggins Mustang and led 244 laps on his way to the win making it 3 out of the last 4 for Donnie. Little Bud Moore finished second in a Mercury Cougar but I cant confirm if it was the #1 car he had been driving or if it was Bud Moores second car #15.

The #72 66 Baracuda had previously been driven by Dick Staples but he was not listed in results for the Bristol race. I cant confirm who was in the Plymouth that day. Looks like Marty Robbins is trailing smoke in the #4 66 Dart. John Sears had driven this car earlier in the year.

I don't know the source of this picture but it is said to be from Bristol in 1968. You can see both of Bud Moores Cougars were there but it doesn't state who was driving the #15 that day. Notice the stock type rims on the #4 Dodge Dart. The previous picture above shows steel rims used during the race.

Thanks Robert, I knew Charlie, Tiny and Jim Paschal would later drive a '71 Toy Bolton Camaro but did not remember the #10 '68 Camaro being Mr. Bolton's.

RR member Dave Fulton found this picture of the #10.

Thanks Chase. The report I have did not state Ken Rush spun on lap 195. Even this report did not tell if he spun on his own or if he had help. Probably just great dirt track racing!

Race number 18 was held at Greenville-Pickens Speedway and was 200 laps on the mile dirt oval. Tiny Lund started on the pole and led the first seven laps before Jim Paschal went to the front and led until he crashed on lap 54. Buck Baker then took over the point thru lap 82 with T.C. Hunt leading from lap 83 thru 95. Charlie Blanton moved to the lead on lap 96 were he would stay until Ken Rush moved to the front on lap 169. With 10 to go it looked like Rush would record his first win of the year but in the next four laps Blanton got to his bumper. It was a battle but Blanton completed the pass on lap 195 and led the last four laps to take his second victory of the year.

There were 9 cautions for 43 laps with 14 of the 19 starters running at the finish. Frank Sessoms third place finish got him within four points of Hunt in the points race.

SAVANNAH GT 200 July 11, 1969

Stock Car Racing History

Dave, Butch was from Gainesville, Georgia. He ran 8 races in 1969 and 3 in 1970. I think he drove a #95 Camaro in all of them. That's about all I know except I think his name is spelled wrong here. I think it should be Butch Harbin. I've also seen it spelled Harben but I think all 3 of these spellings are in reference to the same person. Harden is how it was spelled in the NASCAR Newsletter I got the results from so that is how I listed it.
