Dave Fulton update

Thanks for the update Tim.
Kyle could tell the Petty story of the 80's but I don't think he will. People outside of the family don't always understand the dynamics of the family. He respects his Dad and I don't think he would write something that people might misinterpret. I also think Kyle was a better driver than he is given credit for. Maybe not one of the greats but a darn good one. I saw him spank the field a couple of times at Rockingham. Kyle and I are the same age and I was one of the ones that thought he did not take it seriously enough in the beginning but over the years I have come to respect him greatly.
Robert, Dad ran at the fairgrounds in the mid to late 50's and remembered it as 3/8 of a mile. The aerial photo looks larger than that. Did they make it shorter in the mid 50's?
Robert, Great find. I thought this track operated as an independent or outlaw track up until the late 50's or was there another track in the same area that was open until then?
Sad news. Thoughts and prayers for family and friends.
GT 250
Hickory, NC. June 7, 1969
The 10th Grand Touring race of 1969 was held at Hickory Motor Speedway and was 250 laps on the 4/10 mile paved oval. I have very little information on this race except that Tiny Lund qualified on the pole and Pete Hamilton dominated the event leading 233 of the 250 laps on his way to his second win of 1969.

Dec. 7th and June 6th are days I will always remember. Both before my time but I grew up liking history too and WWII in particular and knowing men who served. Forever grateful to those who served.
June 6th is also my brothers birthday. Happy Birthday Keith!
MODEL CITY GT 100
Kingsport, Tn. June 4, 1968
The 6 th Grand Touring race of 1968 was held at Kingsport Speedway and was scheduled for 267 laps on the 3/8 mile dirt oval. Qualifying was rained out so the starting order was set by random draw with Ernie Shaw drawing the pole position. Donnie Allison and Tiny Lund refused to race because of track conditions. A crowd of 4,000 saw two time Grand National Champion Buck Baker out front by 6 laps when the race was stopped at 185 laps because of a midnight curfew. The win netted Buck $1,000.00 and the point lead as Tiny dropped to 5 th in the standings.

I think it is Louis Clements.
Dave, This was the first GT race I attended. I sat in the grandstand with with my Uncle James, dad's brother. I don't remember the car Ray drove but do remember that after Paschal went out dad had the field covered until the crash which ended right in front of us. Bent both ends of the car but was able to salvage a top 10 finish. Tiny was driving the same Cougar that he drove for Bud in '68 but it was being crewed by Tiger Tom Pistone in '69. The "marbles" was a problem for a lot of drivers that day. You could run two abreast thru the corners but the guy on the bottom had to hug the inside and the guy on the outside had to be on the other cars door handle. Any higher than that and you were going for a ride. Dad was lapping Vandiver on the outside at the end of the back stretch and they were side by side in the middle of 3 and 4 when Jim came up the track for some reason and forced dad into the marbles. That started the spin that ended up making contact with the outside guard rail in turn 4 and the inside rail at the beginning of the front stretch.
