Stock Car Racing History
S
Sorry for the spelling error. Richie and Les Bartz. Spelled it like I heard it pronounced.
Richie's racing resume is HOF material. Master fabricator that worked on some history making race cars from the Ford GT-40 to Championship stock cars.
Chase, The car seen at the truck race was the real deal, not a tribute. If I remember right it was found in New Mexico after it had been retired from dirt track duty. The man who bought it had it restored by some of the same crew that worked on it at Rockingham in 1973. I had the good fortune of seeing the car just before the restoration was finished. It was restored by Tex Powell, Richie Barz and Les Barz. All three of these men worked on getting the Chevy back on the track that day at the Rock.
Chase, The race preview from The Dispatch list T.A. Toomes as expected to compete but his name did not appear in the races results. T.A. earned his strips working for Smokey and the Petty's and built the engines that powered Sam Ard to many late model sportsman wins. I had never heard that he drove any so I asked dad about it. He did not remember T.A. ever driving but he said T.A. had a brother that drove some.
Dave, found this in the Nov. 10, 1955 Fayetteville Observer
Chase, I see Lee Petty standing beside the car and I guess Bill Lutz behind the wheel. Who is the big fellow with his arm around Bill? Sure looks like Tiny Lund to me.
It is interesting to me to see the names of drivers in these GN races that I have seen in reports from outlaw tracks. I uncovered the following in research on the Bennett Speedway.
Race number two was held on Sunday, July 15, 1956. At least 45 cars took to the track that afternoon as 800 watched from the stands. Again, race results are not available, but since the purse was paid by check a review of the July bank statement reveals a good guess. The top money winners that day were Pete Yow of Sanford ($85.00), Homer Burhead Nantz from Mooresville, Ken Rush from High Point, Bill Hall of Haw River, Billy Foster from Thomasville, Ruben White of Asheboro, G.W. Gerringer of West End and Charlie Tyson. Larry Isley, A.L. Henderson, Sonny Cheek and Hal Cagle all got $10.00 followed by James Driver, Bill Eubanks and Dick Matthews. All other drivers received tow money.
Grand American regular in a Ford Mustang Ernie Shaw pilots a Chevy to a 16th place finish and NC short track ace from Burlington Larry Isley made the show. Not names you see in many GN events.
I was at Charlotte that day and can tell you that DW parked that Jr. Johnson hog up high between 1 and 2 when Petty went by. Richard was big but I knew DW was to when the Jr. Johnson hauler blasted past me headed for the back gate.
