I scored several Late Model Sportsman and a couple of GNE races for Dad. Having to concentrate on one car was not much of a change for me because that is what I always did, scoring or not. As stated, every 10 laps you had to hold up the scorecard so Morris Metalfe could see the number written on the back. Had to hold it up until you knew it was recognized. I had to wave mine at them several times to ensure it was seen, you would start getting anxious when your car was coming back around and you had not been acknowledged. Maybe it was just me but it seemed that the scorers with the numbers of the super stars got recognized a lot quicker. I also remember that the tracks that had scorers stands separate from the grandstand made the job easier.
Well Dave, my treasured artifact is not something you set on but something you wear. Before team uniforms were part of an advertising campaign they were home made. The crew that went to Rockingham Speedway with Dad in the 60's had white cotton shirts with a #4 made of red and blue cloth sewn on the back. He even made one for me and my brother, I still have it.
Dad tells a story about those team shirts. They took a '57 Chevy to Hickory in 1963. Dad was the only one with Nascar license so the two that went with him had to sit in the grandstands. The car was geared to run Rockingham, shorter and less banking than Hickory, so he ran so poorly that the crew took their shirts off in embarrassment and got sunburn.
I could not agree more Bobby, and PLK also had it right about public funding. If the Hall had been placed between the speedway and the interstate it would get much more exposure just from location but when OPM (other peoples money) is used the rules that lead to good decisions are not.
Thank you Jeff, for creating the place we can share our racing history and for being true to the theme "Where Legends and Fans Unite".
Congratulations "Tiger" Tom!
Congratulations Ray, an honor well deserved.
Tim, You had me hooked until you said it was a Matador. LOL.
