THE 46 or the 24 SOME MAY NOT KNOW THIS

Current NASCAR

In short its the stuff thats put in gas to replace the ping or knock if you will, otherwise known as lead which is very deadly on catalytic converters. It doesnt do nothing for octane for some reason. Now after all that someone put it in words of another wit..

I had a local parts house here in the 80s supply me with oil and filters, the oil came in 5 gal cans and the filters were a name that I cant remember, the oil poured like water and the oil filters you could crush with your hands, think the filters were Big Chief or something like that. not a good deal on sponsorship .

I have always been true to the brand of Valvoline and only used part number "235" 50 wt.

It isnt easy to get now and only if you know someone in the parts house. I buy it by the case or like 5 cases at a time. The NAPA store here orders it for me. its getting kinda expensive. its just short of $100 for a oil change and filters.

THE 46 or the 24 SOME MAY NOT KNOW THIS

Current NASCAR

betcha didnt know this

Beginning with his NASCAR Sprint Cup debut in the 1992 season finale at Atlanta Motor Speedway and continuing through last year's final race at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Jeff Gordon has always raced with the No. 24 adorned on the roof and sides of his familiar Hendrick Motorsports Chevy.

That's 761 career starts in NASCAR's premier division, all with the same number. It turns out, however, that original plans actually called for Gordon to have another number: The No. 46.

Gordon's former longtime crew chief turned TV personality and car aficionado Ray Evernham, who guided the driver to three of his four championships, made this shocking relevation Tuesday on Twitter -- and even included a picture of a race-ready, rainbow-colored No. 46 car sitting on the shop floor at Hendrick Motorsports back in the day.

Evernham's story goes that Gordon apparently was originally supposed to be assigned the 46 as his permanent number, but a licensing stipulation involving the No. 46 car driven by actor Tom Cruise in the 1990s hit movie "Days of Thunder" stood in the way of Gordon ever campaigning the number. So the No. 24 it was. And has been all these years.

But without Evernham's surprising tweet this week, perhaps only a few team insiders would have known about the number that was supposed to be Gordon's, but never was. NOW YOU KNOW ANOTHER PAGE IN HISTORY----- memories

Charlotte Begs Banks to Forgive $21 Million NASCAR Hall of Fame Loan

General

Wow All this forgiveness -- our beloved Nascar is going down hill in a paper basket.

Us older members of the dirt era never heard of anything such as this, Or at least I never heard of it openly. True there were some good drinking lightening massaged around to keep some things quiet but there are some things lately that are way out on a limb. You never hear anything but millions talked about by people in high places that are tied to paved racetracks. And guess what 90% are in default or just plain bankrupt. Im just sad that the current owners have let their tracks deteriorate to this point, and then that bunch that built the museum and the corporate offices with no thought of the real future or how this would be repaid.. True they was supposed to have tenants to amply repay the loans BUT no back up that I see for repayment. And then go in and ask for forgiveness like the good book says? It too has rules for that .. You got me going on this. My dad and his associates were contractors and played the money game but never was it this far upside down. There was always a back up and it was upfront and legal. I truly hope ones with deep pockets stand up and take care of this as others in middle Ga took care of theirs. "God help our Sport"

oh yeah a paver Im told

Bring a Paver: Historic Marlboro Motor Raceway For Sale

This racetrack located about 20 miles southeast of Washington D.C. seems to be Marlboro Motor Raceway, a track dating from 1952 and closed 17 years later when the local SCCA moved to Summit Point in West Virginia. Initially a dirt oval, 1954 saw a paved road course added while later additions included an infield karting track. Used for SCCA and NASCAR events among others, the site is notable as the starting point for Roger Penskes racing career and as the inspiration for Marlboro Maroon Metallic, a Corvette factory color in 1967 and 70. Find it here on Craigslist in Upper Marlboro, Maryland for $1k to $1,250 per acre and formerly listed for $9.98m outright. Special thanks to BaT reader Nick P. for this submission!

Also used for Maryland state police training and motorcycle racing, the track is said to have been closed due to safety concerns and unspecified issues between the SCCA and track management. Heres a map detailing the track in its glory yearsit looks quite technical and very fast with a sizable straight and several long sweepers.

Some of the best info and pics can be found here on the BARC Boys site . This Autosport.com thread contains some good historical info on the track, while this Google maps aerial image shows it as-is todayanother, cached preview image highlights its former layout through overgrowth, though the larger original seems to have been deleted.

Above is one of the better preserved sections of track as it remains today, and below is a compilation of some great color racing footage from 1960, with Alfas, 356s, a Deutsch Bonnet, Daimler SP250s, Cunninghams, Astons, MGs, Triumphs, Corvettes and even a Ferrari 250GT California shown competing in close quarters. Open wheel formula cars are also seenif only there was audio, too.

This final image shows the track even hosted endurance eventspretty cool. While researching we came across several somewhat recent mentions of efforts to reclaim and refurbish the track for use as a driving school, but no hard info could be found.

Very little if any infrastructure seems to be salvageable, but wed still love to see it restoredor more accurately rebuiltas close to its original, expanded form as possible. Modern safety concessions like more and larger sand traps, runoff areas and the like would be important of course, but the area appears to remain largely rural meaning noise restrictions should be workable. Should we start a pool? Here are the rest of the present day pics from the listing:
