Gippy was from Macon. I don't recall Hand. I thought that I knew everyone from this area. I'm sure there are others that ran there from Middle Ga. as well but the old thinker just ain't what it used to be. "Hoot" and I used to pull together when we ran out of town. That's the reason that I recall him running there.
I know two of us from Middle Georgia ran at the 1/2 mile Augusta track. The late "Hoot" Gibson and myself Tommie Clinard. We would come over when they held a big race there. I lost a wheel cylinder on my tow vehicle there one Sunday when leaving the track. We had to spend the night. I went to a parts house first thing Monday and purchased a cylinder and fixed the truck and headed home to Macon. There went the earnings for that race. It was a nice track to race on. But like so many.....now only a memory.
Or how about Stewart Seymore when he kept telling Bob Moore that the car would handle like a dream all the time he was building it. Then Bob strapped in for hot laps and Seymore casually lite a cigarette and kneed down and told Bob, "Be careful Bob. I have no idea what this thing's gonna do."
Happy Birthday Racers Reunion. I am so glad that I was directed to this site. It is GREAT in that it gives recognition to a lot of people that otherwise would not receive any. With photos and profiles these people can now receive the recognition that they so deserve for their participation in the greatest sport there is. Those that participated are also the greatest people I have had the pleasure of knowing. They will race you hard and heavy and then when they park it they will help you work on yours to make it run better. Where else can you find that in any sport.
I remember my first race as a driver. It was in 1956 at Palm Beach Speedway in West Palm Beach Florida in the NASCAR Amateur Division.. Palm Beach Speedway was a paved 1/2 mile high banked track. Very fast. A man asked around if anyone knew of a driver for his car as his driver did not show up. I told him that I was a driver even though I had never driven before. So I went to my nearby car and got my helmet and proceeded to race my first race. I finished 6th in the heat race and 4th in the feature. My Dad came down from the stands into the pits and I introduced the owner to my Dad. I will never forget my Dad's remarks. "Not bad for his first race huh?" The owner never said anything about that remark. I did get a strange look though.
