Racing History Minute - May 19, 1962

Stock Car Racing History

Wow, a lot of Georgia drivers are on the point standings....even Atlanta's Ed Samples winning the title it appears. An interesting note is that the 25th place finisher, Swayne Pritchett, passed away in May of that year. He was among the first of drivers to obtain a NASCAR license even. After winning a race in Arcade Georgia (Seems to be around May 17th or 18th of that year) he ran into the back of a slower car on track, flipped and was killed. He was also inducted into the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame in 2011.

Also just counted 14 drivers on that list that were from/racing out of Georgia.

Thanks for getting this out Johnny, I didn't have time yesterday. We'll be announcing the 2013 class on the 25th of this month at our annual Memorial Day Weekend Car SHow.

Re-purposed Kyle Petty show car - maybe a third life?

Stock Car Racing History

Wouldn't be the first time a showcar had been in a race. Remember in 1983, when Cale flipped the Hardee's Monte Carlo. He used a back-up Pontiac Ventura and won.....when the series rolled around to Atlanta (4th or 5th race of the season).....

I don't remember the exact details on this whether Cale wrecked a car during Atlanta practice or Ranier hadn't yet prepared another speedway car. Any how, they put a race-built engine in a Hardees showcar that just the previous week had been at a Hardee's grand opening. The car was built STRICTLY for a show piece. From what I've heard, it had a stock Chevy chassis that was lowered to race spec and light-wight roll cage. Needless to say, the car wasn't the safest...but Cale drove it to victory for the Coca-Cola 500 at Atlanta that year.

10 Quick Years Since Craven/Busch Darlington Side-By-Side Finish

Stock Car Racing History

One of the best moments in the sport's history I think.....still a Darlington DAY race, there was a Pontiac, and Winston was hangin' on.
